According to new research just published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports , drinking coffee and tea in moderation every day can help people with high blood pressure reduce the risk of dementia, according to the medical website News Medical.
People with high blood pressure who drink 0.5 - 1 cup of coffee per day have the lowest risk of dementia.
To investigate the link between coffee and tea consumption and the risk of dementia in people with high blood pressure, a team of scientists from the School of Public Health, Ningxia Medical University (China), conducted a study including 453,913 participants with an average age of about 72, of whom more than 54% had high blood pressure. Participants were followed for more than 15 years.
Researchers found that people with high blood pressure had a higher rate of dementia than people without high blood pressure.
The results found that people with high blood pressure who drink 0.5 - 1 cup of coffee per day have the lowest risk of dementia, according to News Medical.
High blood pressure may increase the risk of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease
For tea drinking, people with high blood pressure who drank 4-5 cups of tea per day (8 ounces per cup) had the lowest risk compared to the group that did not drink tea.
Additionally, if they drank both coffee and tea, moderate drinking also reduced the risk.
The results also showed that for both people with and without high blood pressure, caffeinated coffee had a greater effect than decaffeinated coffee.
The amount of caffeine consumed also has a big impact, with moderate caffeine consumption having the greatest effect.
The researchers concluded: Coffee and tea consumption reduces the risk of dementia for everyone. However, people with high blood pressure who drink 0.5 - 1 cup of coffee or 4 - 5 cups of tea per day reap the greatest results. This effect is lower for people without high blood pressure.
