Photographer Nguyen Xuan Tuyen: Preserving the beauty of the homeland

Up to now, although he has won many awards at home and abroad, every time he talks about photography, photographer Nguyen Xuan Tuyen is still modest: With photography, I am an amateur!.

“Photography is a destiny to capture emotions through what I record on my trips to rural areas across the country. Of course, my birthplace, Hoai Nhon - Binh Dinh, is the place that makes me feel the most,” photographer Nguyen Xuan Tuyen said.

When asked what inspired him to take up photography, Tuyen shared: “Because there are so many beautiful scenes, I want to preserve them. Like Quy Nhon itself, where I live and interact with every day, but every day I pass by, I discover more interesting things and beauties. Like the mornings cycling on Xuan Dieu Street, watching the sunrise in the coastal city, the scenery here urges me to remember it. At first, I started to get used to taking photos with a travel camera. In 2014, I had the opportunity to meet a few friends who play with photography, and with their encouragement, I upgraded to a slightly higher-end camera and began to learn more about everything.

He joined photography quite late, so in addition to investing in equipment, he also focused on equipping himself with knowledge about photography, especially setting parameters, choosing composition, exposure, etc. He accumulated shooting experience through pressing the shutter and then exchanging with friends and other photographers, and diligently looked at photos of authors who won prizes in competitions to refine the structure, improve and enhance his ability to approach artistic photography. Thanks to that, his later photos increasingly showed a solid hand in technical processing and compositional selection.

Nguyen Xuan Tuyen was born in 1959, from Hoai Thanh, Hoai Nhon, Binh Dinh, currently living in Quy Nhon. He is a member of the Photography Association (Binh Dinh Literature and Arts Association), a member of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists.

Artist Nguyen Xuan Tuyen is considered by his friends to be… a hard-working traveler. He travels a lot, inside and outside the province, even abroad. And at those times, the camera is always a companion to capture the moments and scenes that he finds interesting perspectives. Recalling a trip that left many emotions and brought unexpected results right in his hometown of Binh Dinh, he said: “On a weekend, I followed the Quy Nhon Mountaineering Association to Eo Gio, because I wanted to take pictures of the sunrise, so I left early at 4 o'clock. When I arrived, the sky was still dark. Just a moment later, an amazing natural phenomenon began to appear - a spiral-shaped pink cloud from below the horizon moved very quickly upwards, quickly set the parameters and took a photo, and less than 5 minutes later the phenomenon ended. That was the moment I accidentally captured, but normally, taking a photo takes a lot of time and effort. There are some angles that after taking the photo, I still feel like something is missing and only when I come back will I have the opportunity to complete it...".

In nearly 10 years of officially holding the camera, many of his works have won high awards: The photo K50 Waterfall was selected to be exhibited at the 9th International Art Photography Contest in Vietnam in 2017 (VN-17) and won first prize in the 3rd round - cover photo category at the photo contest "Heritage Photography Award - Heritage Journey 2017"; the work Diving to see coral won second prize in the Binh Dinh Tourism Photo Contest 2019 organized by Binh Dinh Department of Tourism; The saltwater barrier dam on Lai Giang River won second prize in the first Art Photography Contest on the value of water - 2021 organized by Binh Dinh Department of Natural Resources and Environment; Second prize in the "An Nhon Past and Present" art and news photography contest with the work New Day on Nui Mot Lake , 2022... In addition, he has won many international awards: The work Dawn on Eo Gio won the "JCM SILVER" silver medal at the "ASSAM Circuit 2020" contest in India sponsored by PSA; the work Lo Dieu Mua Moss won the Mol Gold medal at the "Photo Magic 2020" contest organized by Magic Art Group "PhotoMAG", Bosnia and Herzegovina sponsored by PSA; the work Golden season in Mu Cang Chai won the Gold medal at the "1st Pioneer International Exhibition of Photography 2020" contest in China sponsored by PSA...

With such outstanding contributions, in early 2023, he was one of two photographers in Binh Dinh to receive a certificate of merit from the Vietnam Photographic Association for his outstanding achievements in photography. These are worthy recognitions of his efforts and contributions to the photography activities of Binh Dinh.

Nguyen Xuan Tuyen takes many photos with a variety of topics. However, landscape and travel photography are still the topics that he is most passionate about and will continue to pursue. He confided: “With this type of photography, in addition to satisfying my passion for traveling, I also have the opportunity to promote the beauty of my homeland and country to friends not only in the country but also in other countries around the world.”
