In May 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism included the weaving craft of Long Khanh A commune, Hong Ngu district in the list of national intangible cultural heritage .

The traditional handicraft village in this island commune has been formed and developed for over 100 years. In addition to the main product of scarves, the villagers have created products such as shirts, ao dai, handbags, hats... which are popular with tourists.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khoi - Chairman of Hong Ngu District People's Committee - said that currently, Long Khanh A weaving village has 58 households working in the craft, with 147 weaving looms, creating jobs for over 300 local workers.

Every year, the craft village produces and supplies the market with more than 5 million scarves of various types, priced from 50,000 - 160,000 VND, depending on type, color, and size.

As one of the households weaving scarves in Long Khanh A commune, Mr. Huynh Huu Hiep said that the weaving profession was passed down from his ancestors through many generations. At first, people grew mulberry trees to raise silkworms to weave cloth. In the 1960s, thread began to be available, making weaving easier.

But hand weaving only reaches 20 pieces/day, raw materials are scarce, seasonal sales make income unstable, the craft village gradually fades away.

"By 2022, people will be weaving machines 3-4 times more efficiently than the old style, helping to increase the value, design, color... taking advantage of tourism, attracting many international tourists. The weaving profession is recognized as a national cultural heritage, helping us to try harder in production and preserve the craft village for our children," said Mr. Hiep.

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien - Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee - said that the traditional craft of weaving scarves recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage is the pride of Dong Thap people, meeting the aspirations of the craft village people through generations to preserve and promote the cultural values of this land.

To continue preserving and promoting heritage values, Mr. Thien suggested that relevant departments and branches take practical measures, associated with tourism development to attract visitors; preserve heritages at risk of being lost; organize educational activities, bring the core values of cultural heritages to students; build preferential policies for establishments and households in traditional craft villages to invest in infrastructure, machinery and equipment to serve the development of traditional craft villages.
