Many generations of pipa artists participated
"The song Bui Chalk alone has the participation of more than 40 pipa artists, gathering the most pipa lecturers and students ever," the artist shared.
Some of the veteran names include People's Artist Mai Phuong, the next generation of artists includes Meritorious Artist Nong Bich Kim, Meritorious Artist Kim Hanh, Hoai Thu, Dieu Thao, Thanh Thu, Kieu Linh, Dam Thai Ha...
Next are younger students, some of whom are only 7 or 8 years old. In addition, there are also artists who originated from the pipa but are known in other fields such as "beautiful sister" Huong Ly, actress Minh Huong...
Dieu Thao said that when making this album, in addition to gathering many generations of pipa artists, the story of People's Artist Mai Phuong, U80, despite her old age and weak health, still loves pipa so much that she asked her family to "carry" her to the studio, to sit on stage and play the instrument with the artists of the next generation - moved her.
People's Artist Mai Phuong is considered the "number 1 pipa player in Vietnam" today, the one who improved the pipa from an 8-key octave system to 18 keys with 3 octaves so that users can freely "play" all musical pieces, from ancient folk music of the North - Central - South to domestic and foreign works.
She is the first and only pipa artist to be awarded the title of People's Artist, and is called "Mother Phuong" by many generations of students.
Special Concert Album
The album Bui Phan includes 8 pieces of traditional musical instruments: Bui Phan (pipa ensemble), Qua Cau Gio Bay (pipa ensemble), Ly Cay Bong - Ly Keo Chai (Tu Quy group), Beo Dat May Troi - Hoa Thom Buom Luon (Tu Quy group), Ngau Hung Bong (Dieu Thao), Asean Vietnam (Tu Quy group), Luu Thuy - Kim Tien - Xuan Phong - Long Ho (zither - pipa ensemble).
Chalk dust paved the way for a project of 60 works by Dieu Thao.
After Bui Chalk will be the album Tu Quy with a combination of pipa and other traditional instruments with electronic music.
Dieu Thao said there will be an album of traditional music in collaboration with traditional music artists such as Meritorious Artist Viet Hong on the zither, artist Duc Dung on the moon lute...
Regarding the reason for doing a project about the traditional pipa, Dieu Thao shared that she loves the pipa very much and wants it to have a position in cultural and artistic life.
To achieve that, we cannot make general calls but must realize it through specific actions.
She also said that her students are not only academy students but also young children and autistic friends.
They came to the pipa because they loved it, learned it out of passion and voluntarily, and persistently practiced and performed regardless of time... Those were the things that urged Dieu Thao to decide to "play big" with the pipa.
