More and more useful AI tools for journalists

Công LuậnCông Luận11/05/2024

“I think journalists need to be among the most informed citizens about AI. We owe it to our readers,” said Nikita Roy, a member of the International Center for Journalism (ICFJ).

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has created both optimism and concern in the news industry, leading many to ponder the future of journalism. Despite the risks, AI has proven to be useful in the workplace.

Roy cites a study conducted by Boston Consulting Group that found that people using OpenAI-developed GPT-4 produced 40% higher quality products across a wide range of fields.

AI APPLICATIONS FOR TODAY'S JOURNALISTRY

Generate title suggestions

Roy highlights a free tool on Slack called YESEO that can help users create SEO-friendly article titles and descriptions.

PDF file summary

Creative AI can help journalists effectively summarize information from PDF articles and reports. ChatwithPDF is one tool that offers this functionality. Roy says it's important for users to verify the results with the PDF itself.

Data visualization

The ChatGPT daigr.am plugin can efficiently create organized and concise charts from raw data.

Video content analysis

Journalists can use Google Gemini, among other things, to summarize and analyze information in videos. “You can learn a lot just by using a YouTube video as a source,” Roy says.

Big Data Analysis

ChatGPT's advanced data analysis features are highly accurate because it uses coding languages, such as Python. Users can also ask questions about the data in simple language.

Write alt text

Both ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot offer features that can quickly and accurately write detailed alternative text for images, making multimedia content more accessible.

Find research sources for your article

Roy highlights a number of search engines that can assist journalists in their in-depth research articles.

For example, Perplexity helps users start their research by identifying information sources, checking to see if any fake or inaccurate information is being generated.

The Consensus tool can provide users with insights and key features of research papers, such as results and whether they are widely cited.

Elicit analyzes research papers to extract data, summarize, and organize findings.

Audio to Text

The Oasis AI tool allows users to convert audio into written text.

Working with images and videos

Adobe's AI assistant offers the ability to change backgrounds or add details to multimedia. Adobe's AI features can also create transcripts and storyboards for videos, as well as generate B-roll (additional footage) from a video clip.

For those looking to learn more about AI tools for images and video, Roy recommends considering joining the Lemon AI Academy.

LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS: WHAT ARE THE USES AND RISKS?

Large language models, a subset of generative AI, are trained to understand input text, predict the next word in the sequence, and converse back with the user. ChatGPT and GPT-4 developed by Open AI are popular examples.

“These are very large language models. It takes a lot of time, money, engineering resources to train these things. That’s why only some of the biggest companies do this, like Microsoft and Google,” Roy said. She also cautioned: “Large language models are text generators — they’re not knowledge generators.”

Roy gives four rules for journalists using large language models in the article:

Don't use large language models to find information or generate knowledge. AI is trained to predict text and therefore tends to give wrong responses sometimes.

Large language models are trained on information from the internet and there is a chance that they will produce outdated or incorrect results.

Do not enter sensitive data, as these models remember information and may share personal information with other users.

Don't publish without checking for plagiarism. Due to their memory function, large language models also tend to share information that may have already been published.
