Ms. Thuy said: "Previously, this entire area was used to grow oranges, but then it degraded, so I switched to growing chrysanthemums to sell for Tet. This year, I planted 10,000 trees, and on the last full moon of the twelfth lunar month, I earned more than 5 million VND, the rest is reserved to supply the Tet market. After deducting expenses, my family earns about 30 million VND for each Tet flower crop like this."
This year the weather is quite favorable so the chrysanthemums bloom evenly, beautifully, and the flowers are big.
As Tet approaches, Ms. Thuy is even more careful in her care, regularly monitoring to detect early and promptly handle pests and diseases in the flower garden. According to Ms. Thuy, this year the weather is quite favorable, chrysanthemums grow well, bloom evenly and beautifully, so the price of flowers in this year's Tet season is likely to be good.
After many hardships and painstaking care, at this point, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham's family (Long Son village, Tan Dan commune) can breathe a sigh of relief when the entire 300 m2 flower garden (20,000 plants) of the family is growing well.
Ms. Tham said: "After 4 months of planting and caring, the flower garden produces beautiful, large and even flowers. To prolong the harvest, we spread the crop into 2 batches, some will be sold during the Lunar New Year, the remaining batch will be sold on the full moon of January. Currently, the wholesale price at the garden is 5,000 VND/plant".
This year, Nguyen Thi Tham's family planted 20,000 chrysanthemum plants.
For flower growers like Ms. Thuy and Ms. Tham, Tet is the most important and anticipated crop of the year. In the whole Long Son village, there are 100 flower growers, with the least number of households having 1,000 plants and the largest number having 15,000 to 20,000 plants. The chrysanthemum planting time is around the 9th lunar month and by the 15th of the 12th lunar month, farmers have entered the harvest season.
The joy of farmers in Long Son village when this year's Tet flower crop is both bountiful and has good prices.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh - Vice Chairman of Tan Dan Commune Farmers' Association said: "In the past 5 years, more and more farmers in Long Son village have switched to growing chrysanthemums, especially in the crop season to serve the Lunar New Year market. At this time, households begin to harvest and sell to markets and business centers in the province. To accompany the people over the past time, the association has also guided them to apply scientific and technological advances in care so that the plants grow well and bloom on time for Tet, while connecting to promote, create output and stable prices".
