On the afternoon of the 29th of Tet, the Dong Ha flower market in Quang Tri still had thousands of unsold flower pots. Sellers held their breath waiting for customers and many people stepped in to help, buying flowers.
On the afternoon of January 28 (29th of Lunar New Year), the Dong Ha City (Quang Tri) Tet flower market on Hoang Dieu Street was much busier than at noon the same day. Many people had finished decorating for Tet, but seeing thousands of unsold flower pots, they returned to the market to buy more flowers to support the sellers.
According to the reporter, the Dong Ha City Tet flower market still has thousands of pots of flowers of all kinds that have not been sold. The most are peach, apricot, chrysanthemum...
Mr. Thuong, who brings Tet apricot flowers from Binh Dinh to Dong Ha to sell, shared: "This year's purchasing power is very weak, because the flower market has moved from Phidel Park to Hoang Dieu Street. This has affected people's shopping habits, combined with economic difficulties."
Mr. Thuong also lost regular customers who often came to buy Tet apricot flowers in previous years.
The flower market was still quiet that morning. By the afternoon of the 29th of Tet, the flower market was bustling with buyers and sellers, and many vendors were less worried. Most buyers did not bargain but chose a satisfactory tree, and the seller said that a suitable price was the "deal".
In the crowd of people going to the market to buy flowers for Tet on the afternoon of December 29, there were many people who had finished buying flowers for decoration but still came back to the market to continue buying flowers. Mr. Tran Duy Hung (Dong Ha City) shared: "My wife and I have finished decorating for Tet, this morning we passed by the market and saw there were still too many flowers, this afternoon my wife and I went out to buy some to help the small traders."
The young couple bought two more pots of chrysanthemums, a peach blossom branch and a mini kumquat pot. Regarding the price, Mr. Hung said it was not much cheaper than the price he paid on the 26th of Tet.
Mr. Huynh, who had just returned from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Ha to celebrate Tet with his parents, also took the opportunity to go to the flower market to choose some more flower pots to hang on the wall and make a miniature landscape for the stairs.
Mr. Huynh said that not only Dong Ha but many flower markets across the country are facing difficulties in selling. Therefore, even though his parents have bought "a flower house", he still took his two children to the market to buy flowers with the purpose of "helping people, each person doing their part, hoping that everyone will sell all the flowers and return home to celebrate Tet with their families. It's almost New Year's Eve."
After more than an hour at the flower market, the reporter noted that the peach blossoms that were tightly arranged were now half empty, and kumquat and chrysanthemum pots were loaded onto trucks one by one...
Mr. Dung, who sells crystal chrysanthemums, laughed and said: "Oh my god, this afternoon I thought I would lose a lot. Now I have sold 70%, so I am very happy. Thank you to many people who bought more flowers to help me and many other people who sell Tet flowers."
