Recently, in Ninh Cam village (Tan Dan commune, Soc Son district), a case of a person being bitten by a dog was recorded. This dog was later determined to have rabies.
Immediately, Tan Dan commune authorities coordinated with Soc Son district Agricultural Service Center to handle (destroy) the dog with the source of the disease according to regulations. People bitten by the dog were also promptly taken for vaccination.
Chairman of Tan Dan Commune People's Committee Ngo Thanh Binh said that there are currently more than 3,000 dogs in the commune. To prevent the risk of rabies spreading, local authorities have coordinated with the Soc Son District Agricultural Service Center to vaccinate dogs against rabies.
“Up to now, more than 1,000 dogs in 5/12 villages in Tan Dan commune have been vaccinated against rabies. We are actively coordinating with relevant units to vaccinate the remaining dogs…” - Mr. Ngo Thanh Binh added.
Don't be subjective.
According to statistics, the total dog and cat herd in Soc Son district is more than 83,000 with over 36,000 households raising them; of which: about 69,000 dogs, the rest are cats. This is also the locality with the largest dog and cat herd in Hanoi.
Currently, the method of raising dogs and cats in Soc Son district is mainly small-scale farming for house keeping; a few households raise them commercially. In addition, in densely populated urban areas with developed economies, dogs and cats are raised as pets.
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Son district Do Minh Tuan said that in recent years, the locality has paid special attention to the prevention and control of animal diseases in general and dogs and cats in particular. However, due to the large dog and cat population, the area is large and borders many provinces, so management is difficult.
Currently, along with directing departments to coordinate with local authorities to thoroughly vaccinate dogs and cats, Soc Son district proposes to step up information, propaganda, and guidance for dog and cat owners to closely monitor the health of dogs and cats; to keep dogs and cats in captivity and not to let them roam freely according to regulations.
Representatives of the Agricultural Service Center of Soc Son district recommend that in case people discover sick or dead dogs or cats with signs of rabies, they must immediately report to the local authorities or veterinary staff or the nearest veterinary and medical agency to take timely response and treatment measures.
Recommendations for dog or cat bites: People who are bitten or scratched by a dog or cat suspected of having rabies should immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water under running tap for about 10 - 15 minutes, then disinfect with 70-degree alcohol or other disinfectants to reduce the amount of rabies virus at the bite. At the same time, immediately notify the commune-level People's Committee, health station, and veterinary officer for instructions on safe handling.
