Russian security forces say they have foiled a plot to assassinate a senior military officer and a military blogger with a remotely detonated bomb.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on December 28 that it had foiled terrorist attacks targeting a senior Defense Ministry officer and a military blogger reporting on a special military operation in Ukraine, according to TASS.

A Russian working for Ukrainian military intelligence was arrested for planning the attack. "On the instructions of a manager, the attacker took an improvised explosive device from a location in the Moscow Region with a power equivalent to about 1.5 kg of TNT, disguised as a portable loudspeaker. He spied on the location of the targets in order to detonate the bomb remotely," the FSB said. Russian authorities used a robot to retrieve the bomb.

The initial plan was to place the explosive device under the car of a prominent military blogger or at the gate of the target's house. However, the suspect fell ill and the plan was canceled. He was later ordered to use the bomb to assassinate a high-ranking military officer but was arrested while stalking the target.

The suspect contacted an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine via the Telegram application. The subject is cooperating with the investigation.

Ukraine has not commented on the information.

On December 26, the FSB also announced that it had foiled plots to assassinate senior military officials using homemade explosive devices disguised as power banks and file folders.

On December 17, General Igor Kirillov of Russia's agency for the prevention of radiological, chemical and biological weapons was assassinated outside his apartment in Moscow in a car bomb attack orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence, according to Reuters.
