Newcastle could sign former Man Utd goalkeeper David De Gea after losing Nick Pope to injury.
In the 1-0 win over Man Utd in the 14th round of the Premier League last weekend, Nick Pope suffered a recurrence of his shoulder injury and had to make way for Martin Dubravka. The 31-year-old goalkeeper may need surgery and is expected to be out for four to five months. Pope previously dislocated his shoulder while playing for Burnley, which kept him out for nearly half a year.

Newcastle still have three goalkeepers in the first team: Dubravka, Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie. But all three cannot meet the requirements of coach Eddie Howe. Therefore, "The Magpies" are likely to recruit a quality goalkeeper in the next January transfer window and De Gea is a bright name.
The former Man Utd goalkeeper has yet to find a new home after leaving Man Utd at the end of last season. In August, it was reported that De Gea was invited to play in Saudi Arabia but refused. Newcastle will not pay a transfer fee for the Spanish goalkeeper, but De Gea will demand a large salary.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper used to earn $473,000 a week at Man Utd. However, De Gea is unlikely to ask Newcastle to pay that amount. If all procedures are completed quickly, Newcastle could have De Gea's services as early as the away match at Liverpool on January 2.
Between now and then, the St James' Park side will play seven games, including five Premier League games, a Champions League group stage clash with Milan and a League Cup quarter-final trip to Chelsea. Dubravka is likely to start during this period.
Newcastle are awaiting positive news on Pope's injury. Further details will be provided in the next 48 hours, following scans and talks with the doctor. Pope has kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season with six, one more than Andre Onana.
Newcastle's squad has been ravaged by injuries this season as they have had to play on multiple fronts. In addition to Pope, they will be without 11 other players when they visit Everton in round 15: Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Callum Wilson, Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy, Sven Botman, Harvey Barnes, Javier Manquillo, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Sandro Tonali. The possibility of in-form striker Anthony Gordon also remains uncertain.
De Gea has extensive experience in the Premier League with 415 appearances for Man Utd from 2011 to 2023. He has twice won the Golden Glove award for the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in the 2017-2018 and 2022-2023 seasons.
