According to Kyiv Post, Romania has begun construction of the largest NATO military base in Europe. The project, covering an area of over 2,800 hectares, aims to expand the Romanian Air Force's Mihail Kogălniceanu Base No. 57, located near the port city of Constanta on the Black Sea.
The development plan for the site includes the construction of runways, weapons storage facilities, aircraft hangars, as well as social infrastructure: schools, kindergartens, shops and hospitals; with the aim of permanently deploying up to 10,000 NATO soldiers and their families. The total construction cost is estimated at 2.5 billion euros (2.7 billion USD).
Romania has long been an important hub supporting NATO military alliance operations in the Black Sea, with thousands of US troops moving through Romania on training and security missions since the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted in February 2022.
In terms of size, the new NATO base in Romania is significantly larger than the Deveselu 99 military base, which hosts elements of the US Aegis Ashore missile defense system, and is even larger than the US Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany.
