According to statistics from the Provincial Red Cross Association, the province currently has 614 grassroots school Red Cross Association organizations, attracting 11,233 members, 68,014 teenagers and 26,127 young people to participate in school Red Cross work.
Promoting the nation's tradition of charity, the school Red Cross Associations have proactively developed plans and implemented the Campaigns "Each organization and individual is associated with a humanitarian address", "Tet for the poor and victims of Agent Orange", the models "School to school - connecting love", "Wishes for children"...; actively mobilized organizations and individuals inside and outside the school to donate and support in many different forms to create a source of funding to help teachers and students in difficult circumstances to rise up in life.
The total value of school youth activities in the 2022-2023 school year reached over 20 million VND, supporting 32,154 young people in difficult circumstances.
In the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year alone, the total value of Red Cross activities in schools reached over 4 billion VND. In particular, Red Cross chapters at all levels organized gifts and scholarships for students on the occasion of the Year of the Dragon with an amount of over 700 million VND; mobilized and organized a signing ceremony to sponsor 187 orphans in the province with a total value of over 237 million VND. Implementing the program "Nutrition for poor and disabled children" launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross, Red Cross chapters at all levels in Lao Cai province mobilized and presented thousands of gifts, including necessities, school supplies, clothes, etc. to students in the highlands.
Along with humanitarian activities, 100% of the branches in schools have first aid kits. Many schools actively cooperate with commune and ward health stations to organize medical examinations and provide common medicines for students; implement measures to prevent and control epidemics; develop the model of "Southern medicinal plant garden"; coordinate with organizations and units to promote propaganda work, organize first aid training courses, skills to prevent and respond to natural disasters, injuries, and drowning for teachers and students.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the school Red Cross Associations also promoted the "Voluntary Blood Donation" movement, attracting over 2,000 cadres, teachers, and young people to donate 1,784 units of blood.
Assessing the results of Red Cross activities in schools, Mr. Vu Viet Truong, Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross Association, said: Schools and units have created conditions for Red Cross associations in schools to operate effectively. Every year, schools and educational institutions in the province always pay attention to and focus on consolidating and establishing new Red Cross associations in schools. The number of cadres, teachers, school staff and students participating in the association as cadres, members, youth, and Red Cross volunteers is increasing and of high quality. Therefore, the implementation of activities is vibrant and achieves positive results.
Khanh Yen Primary School, Van Ban District is a unit with outstanding achievements in social work, mutual support, and helping poor students. Inheriting and promoting the tradition of "Mutual love" of the nation, in the 2023 - 2024 school year, the school's Red Cross Association regularly coordinates with organizations and unions to widely launch mutual support movements and raise funds to help poor students and students in difficult circumstances.
Ha Yen Nhi, class 1D, Khanh Yen Primary School, lost her father at a young age. Her mother did not have a stable job and raised her alone. Knowing Yen Nhi's situation, the school's Red Cross Association connected with a benefactor to sponsor her with a support amount of 1.8 million VND/year, to share some of the hardships and motivate her to study with peace of mind and improve her life. Thanks to the care and sharing of her godmothers, Nhi has become more confident, cheerful and sociable with her friends. Along with Nhi, there are 2 other students with difficult circumstances in the school who also received support from this meaningful program.
Ms. Mai Thi Phuong Thao, Principal of the school, said: In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's Red Cross Association mobilized members to support various funds and charity programs with more than 37 million VND; mobilized organizations to give gifts and scholarships to students in difficult circumstances with more than 116 million VND; visited and encouraged families in difficult circumstances, sick people, and families of war invalids with 49 million VND... Participating in the program "Nutrition for poor children", during the school year, the school connected with social organizations and benefactors to organize 3 milk donation campaigns for poor and malnourished students of the school with a total of 2,100 cans of milk.
Charity activities in schools are not only a bridge connecting volunteers with those in difficult circumstances, but also an important contribution to educating awareness, perfecting personality and life skills for students while still in school.
