Roundtable workshop on trade and investment promotion between Vietnam and Alberta. |
During a working visit to Alberta province, the delegation of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Vancouver had working sessions with provincial leaders and organized seminars to promote trade and investment relations between Vietnam and this province.
During a working visit with the Deputy Governor General of Alberta Salma Lakhani and Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Security and Emergency Services Mike Ellis, Consul General Nguyen Quang Trung reviewed the comprehensive cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Canada in general as well as the developing economic cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Alberta in particular.
The Consul General thanked and appreciated the provincial government's attention to the local Vietnamese Canadian community in integrating and contributing to Canadian society while maintaining close ties with their homeland Vietnam.
Alberta leaders highly appreciated the friendly relations between the province and Vietnam and pledged to continue promoting economic, trade and investment relations between the two sides.
Alberta currently exports a wide range of products such as oil and gas, machinery and especially agricultural products, while importing garments, electronics and footwear from Vietnam. Provincial figures show that in the five years of implementing the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Alberta exported an average of more than CAD 140 million (USD 103 million) per year and imported nearly CAD 345 million from Vietnam.
At the investment promotion workshop, Consul General Nguyen Quang Trung provided further information to Alberta businesses about the environment and investment and business opportunities in Vietnam in the context that Vietnam and Canada are both members of the CPTPP.
Free trade agreements such as the CPTPP are opening up many opportunities for businesses in both Canada and Vietnam. After 5 years of implementation, this is a "golden" time for small and medium-sized enterprises of both sides to reach out to the world, while increasing their competitiveness with multinational companies. In addition to tax reduction benefits, agreements of this type will help businesses operate in a transparent legal environment, with investment and intellectual property protection...
According to the assessment of the Alberta Investment Promotion Agency, by effectively exploiting the CPTPP, businesses on both sides will better grasp each other's product structure and further strengthen trade and investment relations.
Vietnam is considered an important trading partner of Canada and the province of Alberta. Canada's top exports to Vietnam include agricultural products, minerals, metals and industrial machinery. Vietnam has been Canada's number one partner in the ASEAN region since 2015.
Global Affairs Alberta and the Northwest Territories are working with Vietnam to create programs to help businesses adapt their products and services to the Vietnamese market. The agency currently has offices in more than 160 cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
During his working trip, Consul General Nguyen Quang Trung had a meeting with overseas Vietnamese in Alberta. The Vietnamese community here is quite large and there are a number of very successful businesses.
The Consul General affirmed Vietnam's consistent policy towards overseas Vietnamese and hoped that the Vietnamese community in Alberta would actively contribute to the development of Vietnam-Canada relations as well as that of Vietnam and Alberta in accordance with the wishes of the leaders and people of the two countries.
Previously, the Consulate General delegation had a working visit to the University of Alberta, where there are currently more than 200 Vietnamese students studying. The University of Alberta is currently planning to cooperate with Hanoi Medical University.
