At a press briefing at the US Department of Defense headquarters yesterday, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said the first batch of depleted uranium munitions, worth $175 million, is expected to be sent to Ukraine this fall, according to Reuters. Singh declined to give an exact date, but Washington wants the depleted uranium munitions to arrive in Ukraine by the time the Kyiv government receives the first batch of M1 Abrams tanks also delivered by Washington. A Pentagon representative denied reports that depleted uranium munitions are linked to causing cancer and birth defects.

On the same day, the Ukrainian Air Force said it had shot down 16 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that were attacking Odessa, a port city in southern Ukraine. TASS quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying that its air defense forces had intercepted two Ukrainian UAVs in the Bryansk region on the border with Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kyiv cited intelligence information showing that Russia was withdrawing units from other regions to the southern front.

In a related development, the Romanian government approved plans to upgrade road infrastructure at the Black Sea port of Constanta, part of an investment effort to increase the volume of grain transited through the port. Constanta is currently Ukraine’s largest alternative export route after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative deal in July.
