Seen from above, Hon Yen looks like a giant whale wagging its tail. According to the locals, in the past, this small island was a place where swiftlets often came to nest, so it was named Hon Yen.
Hon Yen acts as a shield to protect fishermen, and is also a home to many valuable seafood species. However, the coral reef is still the most wonderful thing that nature has bestowed on Hon Yen.
The coral reef ecosystem of Hon Yen is very diverse and rich with 17 species distributed over an area of about 12.71 hectares. The corals in Hon Yen are colorful, associated with geological and geomorphological features, creating a unique feature and becoming a natural symbol of Phu Yen.
Typical in Hon Yen are soft corals and top-hole corals, different from many sea areas in our country. Because of these unique values, experts have conducted many studies to establish conservation areas and protect ecosystems in the sea of Phu Yen.

This beautiful landscape is not easily seen elsewhere. Therefore, the local government has also established the Hon Yen Coral Protection Cooperative Group, whose mission is to manage, protect and conserve the coral reef, as well as organize community tours to contribute to creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.

However, the current problem of Hon Yen coral reef is protection. "People in this area still have the habit of exploiting aquatic products near the shore for their livelihood, which has a strong impact on the coral reef. The working groups in the commune also regularly remind and propagate to gradually change people's awareness. This is the source of livelihood for fishermen, we cannot ban it immediately, but we need time to mobilize, train, propagate and support...", a representative of the local government shared.
To preserve Hon Yen as a green and clean destination, a business located next to the sacred Nam Hai Lang Ong Temple always proactively advises visitors not to litter and avoid catching marine creatures when diving to see coral...". We also want to join hands to protect the landscape to always be green and beautiful, always instructing visitors to stand and watch coral so as to avoid directly stepping on each type of coral", said Mr. Lan, the owner of a beverage shop at Hon Yen.
Tourists should come to Hon Yen in the afternoon of the first or middle of the lunar month, when the sea water gradually recedes to reveal endless stretches of rock and colorful, vibrant coral reefs. Each low tide lasts about 2-3 days, so remember to pay attention so as not to miss this wonderful opportunity to admire the coral "blooming" season on Hon Yen beach.
To get to Hon Yen, you go from Tuy Hoa city, along National Highway 1A about 15 km to the north, then turn right at Phu Diem intersection, go straight on the concrete road about 5 km to the sea, through Nhon Hoi fishing village, you can see Hon Yen.
