Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics officially speaks out about the incident in which a professor of the school was involved in a scientific article being removed.
This afternoon (May 10), Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) officially spoke out about the incident in which Professor Vo Xuan Vinh, from the University's Institute of Business Research, was involved in a scientific article in the Environmental Science and Pollution Research Journal of Springer Publishing House being removed.
Accordingly, the research group's article was officially published online on April 13, 2021 and this scientific journal removed the article on March 14, 2024 because it contained some distorted phrases, including in the title. This article belongs to a group of articles reviewed by guest editors that the journal has investigated and reviewed. Professor Vo Xuan Vinh, affiliated with the UEH Institute of Business Research, is the 5th author out of 9 authors of the work.
Mr. Vinh asked the magazine to remove his name from the article due to misuse of his name.
Information from UEH said that the University worked and recorded the minutes, handling the case with Professor Vinh on March 27, 2024. At the meeting, Mr. Vinh reported and provided necessary evidence.
Accordingly, immediately after discovering his identity was being misused, Mr. Vinh took the initiative. contacted the magazine's Editor-in-Chief on February 15, 2024, one month before the article was removed. In the letter, Mr. Vinh affirmed that he had nothing to do with the article, the article submission process, and did not agree and did not allow his name to be in the author section of the article. Mr. Vinh requested that the magazine remove his name from the article.
On March 21, 2023, Mr. Vinh received a reply email from the Editor-in-Chief of the journal stating that author Mohammed Musah had sent a letter to the Editor-in-Chief confirming the arbitrary inclusion of Professor Vo Xuan Vinh's name in the article without Mr. Vinh's consent, and apologizing for this incident. The journal has also forwarded this letter to the Publishing House's academic integrity department for further action.
Further explaining to the school, among the authors of this article, Mr. Vinh had worked with the first author Mohammed Musah and the second author Yusheng Kong on a Nature Fund project on sustainable development. These two authors were at Jiangsu University - a major university in China.
What does UEH conclude?
According to information from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, with a strict working process, a straightforward recognition of the mistakes (if any) of individual researchers, and at the same time not attributing the achievements of the whole process, UEH has carefully considered the arguments, evidence and conclusions. Specifically, the withdrawn article is related to the processing process of the guest editor and the peer review activities of the journal. Mr. Vinh personally did not receive any sponsorship/reward from the school for this article. Mr. Vinh has also provided evidence of the abuse of his name. This is a case of withdrawing a research article related to copyright.
The school requested Mr. Vinh to seriously learn from his personal experience in international publication cooperation. In addition, as the Director of the Institute of Business Research, Mr. Vinh needs to have a management policy and a strict control mechanism for the unit's extensive network of collaborating research experts based on the rules of the Academic Integrity Council to avoid similar incidents.
Professor Su Dinh Thanh, Director of the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, shared: "UEH's internationalization strategy places research development and international publication as a core competency. However, this is a process that contains many risks. Not only UEH but also a number of prestigious, long-standing, and experienced universities in the world have to face it. The recent incident is an example. That is why the Code of Integrity in Scientific Research and the UEH Integrity Council were established very early and standardized every year. UEH is a collective of researchers who operate with a serious spirit, respecting the regulations of academic integrity. The scientific reward policy is meant to properly recognize contributions, motivate researchers, and has truly promoted the effectiveness of achievements over the past 10 years. We have been making efforts to manage well to effectively operate this policy."
