Emotional surge

The Vietnam Press Museum is a place that marks a press that has gone through bloody and flowery historical periods. From being enslaved by foreign invaders, generations of Vietnamese journalists have strived to gradually rise up, building a "pioneering, innovative" press, contributing worthily to the development of the country and the people.

At the 2024 National Press Festival (held in Ho Chi Minh City), the Vietnam Press Museum has a rather frontal and beautiful corner to display the theme "Vietnam Revolutionary Press 1925 - 2024: 99 professional stories". The image of journalist Duong Tu Giang, a native of Ben Tre, and his story is presented first in the collection "99 professional stories: Martyr journalist".

Many people were moved when reading the lines: “Martyr journalist Duong Tu Giang (1914 - 1956), real name Nguyen Tan Si, from Ben Tre, in the early 1940s was a familiar name in many articles published in Thanh Nien, Mai Du Luan, and Hanh Phuc newspapers.

He was the author of an article related to the story of Saigon suddenly running out of small change at that time. Small change was so rare that when needed, people had to "tear" a 5-dong bill in half to use. Each half was automatically counted as 2.5 dong! Smaller denominations such as coins and dimes were paid for with stamps, bus tickets... Then the Japanese massively issued 500-dong bills under the name of the Indochina Bank, devaluing the currency, causing the cost of living to skyrocket, making the people even more miserable and miserable. Duong Tu Giang then wrote an article criticizing and calling for people to rise up, published in the Hanh Phuc newspaper, immediately the newspaper was closed and the director and manager had to appear in court!

After that, he joined the revolutionary press and wrote for Thanh Nien Moi and Ngay Mai newspapers; founded Van Hoa newspaper with the motto "fighting for national unification, for a lasting peace" with Truc Khanh, Khong Duong and Hoang Tan. Then Van Hoa was closed down. In 1954, Duong Tu Giang was arranged by the organization to stay in Saigon to continue working as a journalist. In October 1955, while editing a morasse for Duy Tan newspaper, he was arrested and imprisoned at Catinat police station before being exiled to Tan Hiep prison, Bien Hoa and sacrificed during a prison break in late 1956. Currently, his name is given to a street in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City. Every year, the Journalism Award named after him (Duong Tu Giang) is held in Dong Nai province".
