Join hands to develop reading culture in the community

BDK - Implementing the Project on developing reading culture in the community, in recent times, activities to develop reading culture in the province have become increasingly diverse, with the participation and cooperation of organizations, unions, and social enterprises, bringing direct benefits to beneficiaries. Public library work, school libraries, along with reading promotion movements organized in many forms, have gradually spread the positive values ​​of reading culture in the community.

Diverse reading promotion activities

Nguyen Dinh Chieu Library is a provincial public library; is the core unit in implementing the Project on developing reading culture in the community. With a system of public libraries spread across the province, district, commune, and grassroots with law bookcases, cultural bookcases, post office - cultural bookcases, farmers' association bookcases... it has been contributing to propagating the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws to the masses; is a trustworthy and friendly learning environment outside of school, contributing significantly to the education of the formation of personality and soul for Vietnamese people. Activities to develop reading culture have the coordination and synergy of sectors, levels, and social enterprises.

Deputy Director of Nguyen Dinh Chieu Library Ho Duy Khanh said: In recent times, we have applied and promoted effective models of developing reading culture such as: Seminar introducing books "Books, knowledge and life"; program "Cultural journey", mobile smart library car, building Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space at offices and places of worship, religion, Book Cafe model... Library activities have also increased in duration and innovated communication forms on mass media and social networks to spread the message about the importance of reading.

In addition, the public library system has been regularly supplemented with a diverse and rich source of books, newspapers and magazines, meeting the reading needs of many readers. Information technology is strongly applied to library activities, providing electronic library and digital library services for readers. The network of libraries and reading points has been expanded through book circulation, strengthening coordination with schools and educational institutions to bring books closer to students. In particular, the placement of bookcases at coffee shops, tourist attractions, places of worship, beliefs, religions, etc.

As a reliable companion organization for young people, in recent times, the Youth Union, Association, and Young Pioneers at all levels in the province have been proactive and creative with many models and movements to encourage young people to read books. Notably, applying modern communication products such as: Motion graphics, Infographics, building digital library models, exchange programs, forums, and competitions in online form.

Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union - Chairman of the Vietnam Youth Union (VYU) of the province Phan Thanh Tre said: “We have been proactive in coordinating and mobilizing domestic and international social resources to implement models and movements to encourage young people to read books. Typical of these is a series of activities within the Project "Implementing social security activities and improving reading promotion for children in the province" jointly implemented by the Provincial Youth Union - Vietnam Youth Union of the province and Global Vision Organization (Korea) in Vietnam, which has built 4 library projects. Each project, with a budget of more than 700 million VND, has equipped more than 3,000 books, computers, and necessary equipment for researching documents, studying, sharing and exchanging knowledge of union members, youth and students at schools. Or the model of "Mobile Library" and a series of activities to guide reading skills, book appreciation for union members, youth and students at 27 primary schools in the districts. The model of "Bookcase to protect the Party's ideological foundation" at 100% of the headquarters of working agencies...".

Youth-friendly development

Nowadays, in the digital transformation trend of the whole country, Nguyen Dinh Chieu Library is gradually transforming from the traditional library management method to the knowledge management method. In particular, focusing on sharing and connecting resources, connecting with libraries in the Mekong Delta Library Association system, to enhance sharing and cooperation in the common use of information resources and linking library service organizations to serve readers. At the same time, the library also promotes the development of information technology, changing the focus of the library from collections stored on traditional shelves to databases stored on modern software.

To make current reading promotion activities more familiar and suitable for young people, cadres, union members and young people are the core force, the role models in practicing the habit of reading every day. Through self-reading, self-study and dissemination, the Standing Committee of the Provincial Youth Union and the Secretariat of the Provincial Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union hope to have a generation of young Dong Khoi youth who aspire for knowledge, develop thinking, and practice analytical and critical thinking skills. From there, contribute to building a learning, creative and sustainably developed society.

“We always encourage union members and young people to proactively propose their wishes, participate in organizing activities to promote reading culture, use social networks properly to share their feelings about books, and expand the space for the community to participate in exchanges. The Youth Union, Association, and Young Pioneers at all levels pay attention to creating conditions for union members and young people, especially young artists and famous people, to participate in educational programs for children, such as storytelling activities, reading books to children, organizing book introductions, and donating books at schools…”, said Mr. Phan Thanh Tre - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Chairman of the Vietnam Youth Union of the province.

The series of activities for Vietnam Book Day and Reading Culture in the province will take place from April 15 to May 2, 2025. The highlight will be held on April 17, 18 and 19, 2025 at the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center with the messages: "Reading culture - Connecting the community", "Entering the era of national growth with books", "Reading books - enriching knowledge, nurturing aspirations, promoting innovation and creativity". Many activities will be organized, including: displaying, exhibiting pictures, books, newspapers, documents, technology and digital services, exchanging old books - for new books, competitions, contests, seminars, training skills, serving books for the community, etc.
