On October 10, the People's Committee of Soc Trang province held a ceremony to temporarily hand over facilities of Area A and Area B of Soc Trang Community College to Can Tho University to establish a branch in this province.
Mr. Nguyen Van Khoi, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province, said that education and training are prioritized in the province's socio-economic development programs and plans. The Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee has also issued an action program to implement the Central Resolution, the resolution on human resource development in Soc Trang for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030.
In addition, along with the socio-economic development, the demand for university and postgraduate studies of high school graduates, people, officials, civil servants and public employees in the province is increasing. The number of 12th graders every year is very large. In the 2023-2024 school year alone, there are more than 10,000 high school graduates and in the 2024-2025 school year, there are 10,472 students studying in grade 12 in the area.

According to Mr. Khoi, the biggest difficulty of Soc Trang in recent times is that there is no university-level training facility to train highly qualified human resources; there are very few cadres, civil servants and public employees with high professional qualifications (postgraduate) in many sectors.
While the demand for university education is very high. In particular, the province has a great demand for high-quality human resources to serve the Tran De deep-water port, logistics zones, industrial zones and clusters, and to shift the labor structure, meeting the requirements of the industrial revolution step by step. Therefore, the urgent requirement now is to have a university and postgraduate education institution located in Soc Trang province.
Based on the above, Soc Trang province and Can Tho University have agreed on the need to establish a branch of the university in Soc Trang province. The goal is to solve the need for on-site learning, shorten the travel distance for students, people and officials, civil servants and public employees. Thereby, it also creates conditions for students after graduating from high school to have more opportunities to study at university, contributing to increasing the proportion of highly qualified resources for the province.

"After many surveys, Soc Trang province and Can Tho University decided to choose Area A and Area B, Soc Trang Community College as the location for the school branch. Last April, the Ministry of Education and Training approved the policy of establishing a branch of Can Tho University in Soc Trang province. This is an important event for Soc Trang province and Can Tho University," Mr. Nguyen Van Khoi added.
According to the plan, when it comes into operation, the Can Tho University branch in Soc Trang will train masters, with the following majors: Information technology, agricultural systems (specializing in climate change and sustainable tropical agriculture); plant science (specializing in smart agricultural engineering). In the 2025 school year, the branch is expected to train full-time university students with 3 majors: accounting, law, logistics and supply chain management.
