Previously, male patient VVC (70 years old, residing in Nhon Nghia commune, Phong Dien district, Can Tho city) was hospitalized at the Department of Cardiology - Kidney - Joint - Endocrinology of Military Hospital 121 due to an outbreak of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the disease progressed severely, and was transferred to the Emergency Resuscitation Department.
The patient was treated with endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, and intensive treatment according to the protocol. During the monitoring and treatment process, the doctors consulted and predicted that long-term mechanical ventilation would be required and indicated tracheostomy. The medical team performed percutaneous tracheostomy combined with flexible bronchoscopy, saving the patient's life in time.
According to Colonel, Specialist 2 Dang Ngoc Thuyet, percutaneous tracheostomy is a procedure to create an artificial airway between the surface of the neck and the cervical trachea. This method has many advantages over the conventional surgical method currently applied to patients in the emergency resuscitation department. The percutaneous tracheostomy process is convenient, the procedure is successfully performed within 10 minutes. After the procedure, the patient's airway is checked with a flexible bronchoscope.
Patients with percutaneous tracheostomy have very low rates of bleeding and infection, minimizing tracheal damage, scarring, and tracheal stenosis later on. Percutaneous tracheostomy techniques are performed in emergency resuscitation departments, so the risks of complications related to transporting critically ill patients are greatly reduced.
Military Hospital 121 successfully implemented the percutaneous tracheostomy technique, contributing to improving the quality of examination, admission, emergency care, and treatment of wounded soldiers, sick soldiers, and people in the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta.
