Doctors at Military Hospital 121 deploy percutaneous kidney stone removal technique

Previously, the Department of Urology at Military Hospital 121 received 4 cases of kidney stones causing water retention and pain for the patients; in which the largest stone was 50x30 mm in size.

After consulting with experts from higher-level hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, doctors at Military Hospital 121 decided to perform percutaneous laser kidney stone removal surgery for all four patients. For each patient, after about 1 hour of surgery, the kidney stones were crushed by laser energy and removed through the tunnel with a skin incision of only about 1 cm.

Kidney before stone removal

According to specialist 2 Nguyen Minh Thuan, the technique of breaking up kidney stones through the skin with a small laser tunnel has many outstanding advantages compared to the classic methods (open surgery), helping patients to have almost no pain, little bleeding; the surgical scar is very small, only 0.5-1 cm; the hospital stay is short, discharged from the hospital after surgery is 3-5 days. Meanwhile, open surgery requires a hospital stay of 7-10 days. In particular, this technique has little effect on kidney function and helps patients recover quickly.

Laser lithotripsy is being successfully performed at Military Hospital 121. This method is highly effective in treating kidney stones, helping patients in the Mekong Delta feel secure in their treatment and avoid having to go to higher-level facilities.
