Sophisticated scams catch victims off guard
On November 19, 2024, Ms. CTQ (1978, Ca Mau) reported to the authorities about an online fraud of more than ten million VND. According to Ms. Q.'s reflection, a stranger claimed to be an electricity official and announced that the electricity at Ms. Q.'s house would be cut off because she had not paid the electricity bill for the previous month. Next, the scammer asked Ms. Q. to access a strange link, install a fake application and perform some operations to pay the electricity bill online.
Due to lack of experience in handling the situation, Ms. Q. followed the instructions of the bad guys and installed the application on the device. After that, the bad guys continued to impersonate and call to "entice" customers to log in to the Viettel Money application themselves. Using sophisticated tricks to remotely take control of the device, the bad guys could easily transfer money out of the victim's account.

When discovering the loss of money in her account, Ms. Q. quickly contacted Viettel Money's customer service team to look up the money transfer history and was advised to report to local authorities. Through the investigation, the authorities determined that the customer's phone had accessed a fake website and downloaded an application containing malicious code, leading to the theft of information and money in the account.
It is known that before that, Ms. Q. successfully participated in Viettel Money's Cyber Security Insurance program. This is a complimentary program (free for the first month when using the insurance service) for money transfer transactions on Viettel Money, helping customers increase account protection.
Thus, at the time of the incident where the device was hijacked by a thief, Viettel Money provided the customer with a free insurance package for money transfer transactions. After Ms. Q. reported the incident, Viettel Money continued to accompany and coordinate with the Insurance company to ensure the rights of customers participating in Cyber Security Insurance.
