The goal of the Health Human Resources Development Project for the period 2023 - 2030 with a vision to 2050 is to have a ratio of 19 doctors per 10,000 people, 4 pharmacists and 33 nurses. However, up to now, Vietnam has only achieved a ratio of 14 doctors and 16.5 nurses per 10,000 people.
This is the data given by university representatives in the online consultation program Choosing a major for the future: "Hot" with the health sector organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of February 11.
The program is online at: thanhnien.vn , Facebook Fanpage, YouTube channel, TikTok Thanh Nien Newspaper.
ALWAYS HIGH PASSING SCORE
Present at the consultation program, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Permanent Deputy Director of Duy Tan University, shared: "The annual quota for this major is about 50,000 - 60,000, accounting for only about 10% of the total quota, but this is one of the majors with the highest admission rate. In fact, at some schools, the competition rate for medical and dental majors is not as high as other majors, only 1/2, 1/3, 1/5, but the admission score in recent years has always been the highest. The reason is that most of the candidates with high scores, mostly over 25 points in block B00, only register for health majors, especially medical, dental and pharmaceutical majors".
According to Master Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, the medical and pharmaceutical industry has attracted excellent candidates for many years because of its high demand for human resources, stable careers, humanistic values and respect from society.
At non-public schools, the benchmark for health majors, although not as high as at public schools, is often the highest among the majors. For example, in 2024, the benchmark for medicine at Nguyen Tat Thanh University based on high school graduation exam scores is 23 points; dentistry is 22.5; pharmacy is 21... Similarly, at Duy Tan University, the benchmark for medicine and dentistry is 22.5; pharmacy is 21.
DIVERSE INDUSTRIES FOR CANDIDATES TO CHOOSE
Dr. Dang Thi Ngoc Lan, Vice Principal of Cuu Long University, said that in 2024 and the coming year, the school will recruit 6 health majors including general medicine, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, medical testing technology, and medical imaging technology with a quota of 40% out of a total of 5,600 quotas for all majors.
"The school considers two methods including high school transcripts and high school exam scores, along with the Ministry of Education and Training's input quality assurance threshold. Regarding tuition fees, general medicine charges 34 million VND/semester, pharmacy charges 18.7 million VND/semester, and the remaining majors charge 11.6 - 14 million VND/semester," Dr. Lan informed.
Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) trains 3 health majors: pharmacy (200-300 quotas/year), nursing (100 quotas) and medical testing technology (100 quotas). The benchmark score in 2024 for pharmacy is 21 points; nursing and medical testing technology is 19 points.
"In addition, if students want to study some health-related majors without having to meet the entrance quality assurance threshold, they can choose biomedical science and technology or cosmetic technology at the school," said Dr. Nguyen Phuong Tung, Head of the Nursing and Testing Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology.
Master Truong Quang Tri said that Nguyen Tat Thanh University is training 10 health majors, including some newly opened majors in recent years such as hospital management, rehabilitation engineering, dentistry, traditional medicine, and pharmaceutical chemistry.
Duy Tan University currently trains 6 health sciences majors including general medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, biomedical engineering and biotechnology. Of these, nursing has the most quotas, about 250, pharmacy 200, general medicine and dentistry each have 100 quotas.
According to Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Duy Tan University has 4 admission methods including direct admission, high school graduation exam scores, competency assessment exam scores of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City National Universities, and academic records.
LACK OF HUMAN RESOURCES IN BOTH QUANTITY AND QUALITY
Dr. Vo Thanh Hai said that the health sciences sector is always of utmost importance because it is directly related to human life. "The quality of human resources determines the health and physical condition of the people. That is why the Ministry of Education and Training always sets a threshold to ensure input quality," Dr. Hai commented.
According to Dr. Hai, the Health Human Resources Development Project for the period 2023 - 2030 with a vision to 2050 sets a target of 19 doctors per 10,000 people, 4 pharmacists and 33 nurses. However, the 2024 data shows that there are only 14 doctors and 16.5 nurses per 10,000 people, much lower than the US, France, Australia, China, Singapore...
"The country needs 632,510 medical workers but currently only has 431,724. Experts assess that there is a shortage in both quantity and quality. Currently, public hospitals in our country have a ratio of 1.2 - 1.5 nurses/doctor while the world requires 4 nurses/doctor. The above information shows that the demand for human resources in the health sector is very large," said Dr. Hai.
Dr. Dang Thi Ngoc Lan also said that as the economy develops, people are increasingly concerned about their health, especially after we have experienced the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Because of the importance of this specialized field, the study time is also longer than other fields, from 5 to 6 years or more with a wide and in-depth amount of knowledge. Practice is also one of the important and mandatory conditions when studying this field, requiring at least 60% of the time. In addition, universities must focus on investing in teaching staff, facilities, ensuring equipment, laboratories, and practice at school and at hospitals according to the standards prescribed by the Ministry of Health in order to be considered for admission and training in health fields, especially general medicine," Dr. Lan informed.
Nursing doctor and pharmacist Nguyen Phuong Tung also acknowledged that the demand for training human resources in the health sector in Vietnam is currently very high, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Many countries also lack medical human resources and have to import human resources.
The demand for human resources has increased dramatically.
The sudden increase in demand for human resources in the health sector, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, places a heavy responsibility on educational institutions that train in the health sector.

Must be healthy
Students studying health care, especially general medicine, not only need to have good academic performance but also good health because the study program is long and difficult.
Master Truong Quang Tri (Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department, Nguyen Tat Thanh University)
Need to be skillful and flexible in operation
Students studying health care must also be skillful and flexible in practical operations, and have the sensitivity to assess the patient's condition. That is something that artificial intelligence can never replace.

Income depends on ability and qualifications
The income of each individual after studying general medicine and dentistry depends on the doctor's ability and qualifications. If you want to have a higher income, you must study well, win awards in your field, have a lot of experience...
