Be aware of tourist taxes when traveling to Europe

Many European cities such as Paris and Venice impose tourist taxes, the more famous the place, the higher the tax.

Most European cities are imposing a tourist tax (or city tax) on overnight stays. The fee is typically a few euros added to a guest’s bill when paying directly to the hotel or through Airbnb, a US-based platform for booking rooms and apartments. Many require guests to pay in cash. If you stay through Airbnb, hosts often collect the money when you check in. In March, Manchester became the first UK city to introduce a €1 tax on overnight stays. Edinburgh and Wales are planning to do the same.

The more popular the city, the higher the tax. Amsterdam, Netherlands, charges a tourist tax of 7% of the total cost of the hotel room plus 3 euros per person per night. In Vienna, Austria, the tourist tax is calculated as follows: First, subtract the cost of breakfast and sales tax from the total room price. Then, subtract 11% from the remaining amount. Finally, take 3.2% of the amount after the two deductions to get the tourist tax amount. For example, if you rent a room for 100 euros without breakfast and sales tax, the tourist tax amount you will pay is 2.52 euros (3.2% of 100 - 11).

In Portugal, the three popular tourist cities of Faro, Vila Real de Santo António and Olhão on the Algarve coast charge 1 euro in winter, 2 euros in other seasons.

Another thing to note is that the more luxurious the accommodation, the more you will have to pay. For example, in Rome, Italy, a three-star hotel is taxed at 4 euros per night, a four-star hotel is 6 euros and a five-star hotel is 7 euros.

Venice also imposes a "city tax" on overnight stays. Visitors staying in one-star hotels pay 1 euro per person per night, while those staying in five-star hotels pay 5 euros. The tax is payable for the first five nights of stay.

Venice also charges a fee to enter the city. Implementation has been delayed several times since it was first proposed in 2019. The city has set the fee to be implemented in 2024. The entrance fee is 3 euros on low days and 10 euros on high days. The fee is only for day visitors, who account for 90% of all visitors, contributing little to the local economy but causing many environmental problems. Meanwhile, overnight visitors only pay a “city tax”. This is Venice’s way of building a sustainable tourism environment, limiting short-term visitors.

In France, the fee varies depending on the metropolitan area and type of accommodation, from 0.20 euros to 4.20 euros in cities outside Paris. Meanwhile, in Paris, the tourist tax is 0.20 euros per night for a one-star hotel stay. Luxury hotels charge around 5 euros per person per night.

In Greece, fees vary depending on the type of accommodation, ranging from 0.50 euros to 4 euros per room per night.

Cruise ship passengers calling at some European ports must also pay a tourist fee. Cruise ships that dock in Barcelona, Spain for 12 hours or more will be charged 4.75 euros per person. In Amsterdam, the fee is 8 euros for ships that dock during the day. Ships that dock for more than 12 hours and those who stay overnight in the city are exempt from the fee. In Italy, tourists who take public ferries or cruise ships that dock in any city must pay a fee. The fee is set by local authorities.

Tourist taxes in Europe also cover the cost of rubbish collection and street cleaning, usually for up to a week's stay. Longer stays will save you money.

Not only in Europe, many US states charge an “accommodation tax” and hotels charge a “resort fee”. These fees are not even used to support the community like in Europe. Visitors entering New Zealand must also pay a $20 tourist tax. Similarly, all visitors must pay 1,000 yen (about $9) before leaving Japan.
