Many diabetics hospitalized for chickenpox

At the Central Endocrinology Hospital, Ms. VTO, from Nam Dinh, was hospitalized with a diagnosis of chickenpox, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and lipid disorders.

A patient with underlying disease with chickenpox developed an infectious and toxic syndrome.

According to the patient, although she had diabetes for 7 years, her treatment was stable. A week before being hospitalized, Ms. O contracted chickenpox from someone else. 5 days later, the patient developed a high fever of 38 - 39 degrees Celsius with blisters in the mouth and throat and scattered all over the body, without itching. The patient bought fever-reducing medicine herself but the condition did not improve.

Mrs. O had a sore throat, a severe cough, a lot of coughing, yellow phlegm, headaches and body aches. On her skin, there were many blisters that had burst, were red, inflamed and had pus, and the patient had difficulty urinating, painful urination... Therefore, her family rushed Mrs. O to the Central Endocrinology Hospital for examination and she was admitted to the Tropical Diseases Department for treatment.

According to MSc. Dr. Pham Hong Quang, Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, the patient was very tired, thirsty, dehydrated, and had symptoms of infection and poisoning. The patient was actively treated upon admission by providing electrolytes through intravenous and oral fluids, antipyretics, specific intravenous antibiotics to prevent secondary infections, and antiviral drugs such as Acyclovir, while actively controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and accompanying symptoms.

Dr. Quang said that recently, the Department of Tropical Diseases, Central Endocrinology Hospital has received quite a lot of cases of chickenpox on the basis of endocrine diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, adrenal insufficiency, etc. Most of these cases are admitted to the hospital with very high blood sugar, electrolyte disturbances requiring active electrolyte rehydration, blood sugar control with injections even though previously the patient only needed to take pills to control blood sugar well.

What should diabetic patients with chickenpox pay attention to?

Dr. Quang said that chickenpox is transmitted through the respiratory tract, often causing clusters of cases, small, scattered outbreaks and is mostly benign. However, in patients with chronic diseases and low resistance such as diabetes, kidney failure, adrenal insufficiency, etc., the disease is prone to complications such as skin and soft tissue infections, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Because these patients have many complex underlying diseases, the treatment process is difficult and complicated, requiring active and comprehensive treatment.

In addition to chickenpox, patients with underlying endocrine diseases also have other infectious diseases such as influenza A, Covid-19, tuberculosis, dengue fever, rickettsial fever... increasing the risk of worsening.

According to Dr. Quang's recommendation, patients with infectious diseases need to be isolated and avoid crowded places such as schools, workplaces, etc. to limit transmission to the community.

In particular, patients with endocrine diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, adrenal insufficiency, etc. should not be subjective when suffering from acute diseases such as influenza A, B, Covid-19, dengue fever, chickenpox, because the treatment of underlying diseases at this time requires certain adjustments and more active treatment, otherwise it may cause complications that can be life-threatening. Therefore, patients need to see a medical facility immediately when suffering from acute diseases, absolutely should not self-treat at home to avoid the disease progressing seriously.
