Taking advantage of the available advantages of endless fish resources, people living in the U Minh Ha forest area (U Minh district, Ca Mau province) have adapted and created many tools to catch fish, such as: fishing rods, traps, nets...
The image of men weaving through the cajuput forests has become familiar to the people of the land associated with Uncle Ba Phi's humorous stories. However, in tourism development, this is considered a way to attract and retain tourists.
Tourists are very excited and fascinated when experiencing with the locals to visit and catch snakehead fish.
Mr. Le Thanh Hai (44 years old, living in U Minh district) shared: To place a net to catch a lot of fish, he often chooses places with a lot of palm trees (tree branches piled up in piles on rivers and canals about 20 - 40m2 wide to "lure" fish and shrimp to take shelter), and crossroads where canals intersect.
“The fish net is circular, about 1 meter long, and the frame is made of bamboo and surrounded by a net. When placing the net, I put bait inside the net and cover it with grass so that the fish will not be scared and can get more into the net. On average, I harvest 2-5 kg of various types of freshwater fish per day,” said Mr. Hai.
In order to protect the fish resources for the following years, people in U Minh district, Ca Mau province always choose nets with large meshes around the net so that small fish can escape and only catch big fish.
Mr. Nguyen Van Mol shared: “My colleagues and I always consider forest protection as our family's rice pot because the forest has given us a prosperous life.
If we exploit in an exhaustive manner, we will only gain short-term profits, but in the long run there will not be much left to exploit.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Du (a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, coming to Ca Mau for the third time) shared: “From childhood to adulthood, I have only lived in a city with busy traffic, but my friends and I share a common interest in countryside scenery, pristine nature to admire the peaceful scenery, where we can experience wading in the forest, setting up traps, fishing...”
According to Mr. Du, he thinks that Ca Mau province's choice to develop tourism in the direction of environmentally friendly experiences is a good way and promises to attract many tourists.
