The journey from student to talented young researcher

This Tet, Tran Thanh Tung (born 2002), a former student of Mathematics - Information Technology K65, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, celebrated the New Year away from his family for the first time when he received a full scholarship for a master's program at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, Canada.

For the young man from Nam Dinh, homesickness, nostalgia for the traditional Tet holiday, nostalgia for the New Year, the custom of giving lucky money, and traditional dishes are always present.

Despite having to celebrate Tet far away, Tung still maintains an optimistic spirit and is determined to pursue his studies. He shared: "Tet away from home is a new experience, helping me to mature and appreciate the traditional values of the nation. I will try my best to not disappoint the expectations of my family and teachers."

Talking about his special journey of being able to write 6 international articles during his university years, Thanh Tung said: "At the beginning of the 3rd year of university, when my friends came to companies for internships, I wanted to pursue scientific research. I went to the faculty to talk to the teachers to gain more understanding about scientific research."

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, was the one who inspired Tung from the early days of his research career. The male student wrote an email asking to "learn from a teacher" and she agreed.

"Reading and understanding the first article was the most difficult stage for me. When I started my research, I was just a third-year student, and I didn't understand much of the knowledge.

Research documents often do not provide basic knowledge but assume that the reader has mastered it, so I have to find more books and other documents to supplement the basic knowledge to better understand the articles," Thanh Tung shared.

For the student at that time, the feeling of loneliness overwhelmed him because he did not know who to ask, asking her to study but asking too many questions was embarrassing. However, this self-study process was sometimes very challenging, but also helped Tung develop his research skills.

Another memorable experience that helped Tung grow was when he attended a series of seminars, where he listened to professors, doctors and leading researchers share their latest research.

Listening directly to experts present and explain research results has helped me broaden my knowledge and create strong motivation to continue developing. In addition, participating in international conferences is a great opportunity to exchange and learn from predecessors.

Under the enthusiastic guidance of the lecturer, after about half a year, Tung and she had the first manuscript submitted to an international journal. Great joy came to the student when he had his first article published in the journal Optimization Letters in November 2023.

"At that moment, my feelings exploded. The first person I shared with was Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy. She not only guided me enthusiastically but also helped me realize my potential and stimulate my passion for applied mathematics, especially the field of optimization. Thanks to her support and guidance, I had the opportunity to participate in scientific research and achieve the achievements I have today," Tung said about his lecturer.

Not only outstanding with excellent academic achievements, Tung also made a strong impression on the scientific community when he had 6 international scientific articles SCIE-Q1,Q2 written with his supervisor during his university years, of which 4 articles were published while he was a student, 2 articles were published later.

At the Final Round of the 2024 Science & Technology Award for Students, Thanh Tung also won first prize with the topic "Inertial iterative algorithm to solve a class of two-level variational inequality problems". This is a prestigious award for students, a worthy recognition of Tung's efforts, creativity and passion for scientific research.

For Thanh Tung, his passion for mathematics is the biggest motivation that helps him overcome everything. The secret to achieving good results is perseverance, persistence and focusing on quality research.

"I always work closely with my supervisor, constantly learning and perfecting my ideas. Besides, maintaining patience and being ready to face challenges during the research process are important factors that help me achieve this success," Tran Thanh Tung shared.

For former students of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, scientific research is a long process and not always easy. However, every challenge brings opportunities, so we need to boldly ask questions and accumulate new knowledge, not only from teachers but also from friends, classmates, etc.

"Never stop improving yourself and gaining new knowledge, whether it is theoretical knowledge or practical skills," Thanh Tung shared.

Desire to contribute to the country

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy commented that Tran Thanh Tung is an exceptionally excellent student with many academic and research achievements. In addition to graduating with honors and receiving a scholarship to study abroad at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan - Canada, Tung also attended the 11th Heidelberg Laureate Forum taking place from September 22-27, 2024 in Heidelberg - Germany.

This forum is where young scientists can meet great scientists who have won the world's most prestigious awards in mathematics and computer science such as the Turing, Fields, Nevanlina... Each year, the organizing committee will select 200 young scientists in the fields of mathematics and computer science around the world to attend.

"Tung is a student who is not only talented but also persistent and passionate about scientific research. From the first days of his research career, Tung has shown his tireless efforts and high learning spirit," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy shared.

According to her, being able to attend the Heidelberg Prize Forum is a clear testament to Tung's achievements.

"I believe that with the knowledge and experience he has accumulated, Tung will continue to achieve more success and make positive contributions to Vietnamese mathematics," the female lecturer hopes.

I always cherish the dream of contributing to the development of Vietnamese mathematics, helping young people with a passion for scientific research and creating new values for the country.

Although his family does not have a tradition of doing research, Tran Thanh Tung still hopes to pursue this path. The former Polytechnic student plans to continue pursuing a doctorate after completing his master's degree, possibly in Canada or elsewhere.

"My long-term goal is to become a mathematical researcher, contribute to the development of the industry and engage in further research in the fields that I am passionate about," Tung said.

Tung hopes that after completing his studies abroad, he will return to Vietnam to contribute to his homeland.

He hopes that the knowledge and experience accumulated during his studies and research abroad will contribute positively to the development of mathematics in Vietnam.
