More Russian weapons depots destroyed?

The Ukrainian military announced on October 9 that it had attacked a depot of artillery shells, missiles and guided bombs in Bryansk province (Russia), according to The Kyiv Independent . Kyiv said that this facility stored weapons provided by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Russia and North Korea have long denied that Pyongyang supplies weapons to Moscow.

Local authorities declared a state of emergency in the area overnight following “explosive object explosions”. Emergency services in the area said the situation was under control and made no mention of any weapons cache.

Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 24 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Bryansk overnight, Governor Alexander Bogomaz said.

Bryansk is a border province, bordering Belarus and Ukraine. It is also next to Kursk province, where Ukraine has been attacking since August.

Several ammunition and fuel depots in Russia have been attacked in recent months. Last month, a Ukrainian drone attack destroyed a major weapons depot in Tver, west of Moscow. The explosions caused a minor earthquake and forced the evacuation of residents in the area. More recently, Ukraine attacked an oil depot in Crimea, starting a fire that has not yet been extinguished.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on October 9 that it had intercepted 47 Ukrainian UAVs overnight. In addition to the 24 in Bryansk, there were 13 in the Azov Sea and adjacent areas, near Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine announced that it shot down 21 out of 22 UAVs launched by Russia during the night. In addition, three missiles were launched towards Poltava province, causing damage to an industrial facility.

Russia recaptures two villages in Kursk

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on October 9 that it had recaptured the two villages of Novaya Sorochina and Pokrovsky in Kursk province, which had been attacked by Ukraine since early August. Novaya Sorochina is located near the Ukrainian border while the other village is deep inside Russian territory.

Moscow said its troops were continuing actions to defeat the intruders, according to TASS.

In late August, Ukraine said it had taken control of around 100 settlements, nearly 1,300 square kilometers of Russian territory in Kursk. By mid-September, Russia announced the liberation of 12 villages. Shortly afterwards, Kyiv stressed that Moscow's counter-offensive had been stopped, according to AFP.

Ukraine Support Group Cancels Meeting

The next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on October 12 in Germany was postponed after US President Joe Biden canceled his foreign trip to stay in the US to respond to Hurricane Milton, according to Reuters.

The organization is a group of more than 50 countries supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The group regularly meets at the Ramstein air base in Germany.

Mr Biden had planned to convene the group's first leaders' meeting, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would present his plan for victory at that event.

The White House announced that President Biden has canceled his trip to Germany and Angola from October 10-15 to monitor the situation of Hurricane Milton, which is about to make landfall in the US.

The date of the meeting is not yet clear, but Russia's TASS news agency, citing a source in Brussels, revealed that the meeting could take place on the sidelines of the NATO defense ministers' meeting on October 17 in Belgium. NATO has not commented on this information.

Ukraine to soon receive supersonic jets from France

Mr. Zelensky presented a five-point plan to US leaders during a visit in late September. Although the details of the path to peace were not released, the leader's plan is said to include military, diplomatic and NATO elements.

In a statement on October 9, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that peace in Ukraine cannot be achieved if the country abandons its neutrality to join the NATO military alliance. According to Reuters, Ms. Zakharova's comments were made in response to information that the West is discussing a plan to admit Ukraine into NATO in exchange for the country accepting Russian control of part of its territory.

Speaking at the Ukraine-Southeast Europe conference on October 9 in Dubrovnik (Croatia), Mr. Zelensky said that the war situation is creating an opportunity to take decisive action to end the conflict before 2026. "In October, November and December, we have the opportunity to bring everyone to lasting peace and stability," Mr. Zelensky said.
