In the 2024 summer-autumn rice crop, Can Tho City coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to deploy a pilot model to implement the Project on Sustainable Development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 (1 million ha Project) in Vinh Thanh district, with a scale of about 47 hectares.
Farmers in the region are trained and apply production techniques, use certified seeds, and apply mechanization in rice production from land preparation to sowing, fertilization, spraying and harvesting.
Mr. Nguyen Cao Khai - Director of Tien Thuan Agricultural Cooperative in Thanh An Commune, Vinh Thanh District, said that the Cooperative was honored to be chosen as the place to implement the pilot model of the 1 million hectare Project. When implementing the model, the members were quite nervous and worried but still accompanied the City to experiment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In July of the same year, this pilot model was completed. On August 28, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Thai Nghiem - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City - informed that the preliminary results of the pilot implementation of the Project model showed encouraging signs.
Accordingly, the model has helped farmers reduce many input costs, such as: total input costs reduced by 10-15% compared to the control; reduced by 50% the amount of seeds used; reduced by 30% the amount of nitrogen fertilizer; reduced the amount of irrigation water by about 30-40%;...
Regarding the profit, the model is 1.3-6.2 million VND/ha higher than the control, equivalent to 6.6-31.5%; reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2-6 tons CO2/ha compared to the control. The enterprise commits to purchasing all rice products participating in the Project at a price 300 VND/kg higher.
"With the advantages and difficulties, the Department has drawn lessons from experience in continuing to mobilize farmers to remove straw from the fields; mobilize farmers to reduce the amount of seeds sown. Moreover, at this time, we only have rice products that reduce emissions but do not have rice brands or trademarks. That is the reason why the market has not developed yet, and businesses have not had easy access.
The Department will proceed to implement the next solutions to gain consensus from farmers in the production area to implement the same process and accompany businesses in the chain linkage from production to consumption" - Mr. Nghiem said.
According to the plan to implement the Winter-Spring crop model 2024-2025, Can Tho City will replicate the high-quality rice production model to reduce emissions from 50 hectares to 200 hectares and further expand on the basis of quality, safety and sustainability.
