Don't panic about the "competition" ratio.

However, the "competition" rate does not mean that it is a top school, because many candidates choose the safe option and choose schools with low admission scores, leading to the number of candidates registering for their first choice being more than the quota.

Previous statistics show that some high schools in Hanoi have a high number of students registering for admission, leading to strong fluctuations in the admission rate; there are also schools with a lower number of students registering for admission than the target... Specifically, in the group of 10 high schools with the highest admission rate in the city, there are many schools with low admission scores every year: Nguyen Van Cu High School has 630 targets, but the number of students registering for the first choice to enter the school is up to 1,355 students (1/2.15); Dai Mo High School has 675 targets but has 1,511 students registering (1/2.24)... Also in the group of schools with high admission rates is Ngoc Hoi High School with 1/2.08 - ranked 13th in the city. Meanwhile, in 2023, this school ranked 107th with an admission rate of 1/1.03.

It is worth noting that during the registration period in recent days, there has been a phenomenon of candidates registering for some schools with a low "competition" rate of less than 1 (the number of candidates registering is lower than the enrollment target). These include Doan Ket High School (Hai Ba Trung District); suburban high schools such as Minh Quang, Nguyen Quoc Trinh, Dong My, Luu Hoang, Dai Cuong, Bac Luong Son... Candidates registering for schools with the above low "competition" rates can rest assured that they will definitely pass. However, according to the recommendations from teachers, candidates should not base on the high or low level of the "competition" rate to predict the benchmark score as well as the possibility of admission, to avoid affecting the effectiveness of review. A low "competition" rate does not mean that the chance of admission of candidates registering for that school is higher than other candidates.

The strong fluctuation in the "competition" rate combined with the regulation that no change of wishes is allowed has made many students and parents worried because they think that the higher the "competition" rate, the higher the admission score will be and the harder it is to get admitted. Mr. Le Viet Duong - Principal of Truong Dinh High School shared that the "competition" rate is relative, reflecting the interest of candidates in the school. The level of this rate depends on many factors such as the psychology of candidates, parents, population fluctuations, admission scores... A high "competition" rate does not necessarily mean a high admission score. Candidates should not worry too much but should identify this as a factor to make more efforts. In addition, each candidate has 3 admission wishes to public schools and there are many other options in different types of schools...

Sharing the same view, Mr. Le Hong Chung - Principal of Yen Hoa High School (Cau Giay District) advised that students and parents should not be confused by information about the "competition" rate but should look at the benchmark scores of previous school years to assess the difficulty. Instead of being distracted, students need to stay healthy and calm to focus on reviewing and trying their best to achieve their goals.

Ms. Dang Thi Thu Ha - Principal of Hoang Liet Secondary School (Hoang Mai District) also analyzed that when registering for a school with a high "competition" rate, students and parents should not be too worried. The "competition" rate is just a factor to know the students' wishes and choices, more importantly is the benchmark of the schools. In fact, a low "competition" rate does not necessarily mean a low benchmark because the students who register may all be excellent students.

Faced with the “heat” of 10th grade high school admissions in Hanoi in particular and big cities in general, safe options in admissions are gradually being chosen by candidates. However, when too many people choose safety, it also means that the safe spots become overloaded, leading to a sudden high “competition” rate.

This reality shows that choosing safety is only a temporary solution for students to get a place in a public school. In the long term, in order for public high schools to not be the only door for 9th graders, career guidance needs to be invested in more systematically and more practically. If career guidance has consensus and support between families - schools - students, then the doors opened by private high schools, vocational schools... will be truly meaningful. Otherwise, it will be a vicious cycle: forced career guidance to protect the achievements of schools.
