To control African swine fever, Cam Xuyen district (Ha Tinh) needs to strengthen measures to inform and disseminate information about the disease; raise awareness and responsibility of each household, livestock facility, and person in the trade and slaughtering profession.

On the afternoon of November 16, the Veterinary Department of Region III coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to inspect the prevention and control of African swine fever (ASF) in Cam Duong commune (Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh).

The inspection team inspected the work of preventing and controlling ASF at Mr. Tran Van Ly's household (Trung Dong village, Cam Duong commune).

According to a report from the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Cam Xuyen District, on November 10, a herd of 12 pigs belonging to Mr. Tran Van Ly (Trung Dong village, Cam Duong commune) showed symptoms of fever, stopped eating and died very quickly. Immediately after that, the center took samples for testing, the results showed that the pigs at Mr. Ly's household were positive for the ASF virus.

Up to now, ASF has spread to 4 households/3 villages of Cam Duong commune, with the number of pigs destroyed being 15 (including 5 sows and 10 piglets), weighing 1,689 kg.

Vice Chairman of Cam Xuyen District People's Committee Le Ngoc Ha reported on the work of preventing and controlling ASF in the area.

The total herd of pigs in Cam Xuyen district is currently nearly 60,000. Immediately after the outbreaks in the area, the district widely announced the disease situation to the people and proactively implemented prevention and control solutions right at their households; when pigs are sick or dead, they must be reported to the veterinary agency or the commune People's Committee, not arbitrarily sold, and not thrown dead pigs into the environment; when importing pigs, it is necessary to choose pigs with clear origin and healthy pigs.

For healthy pigs, the departments and functional agencies of Cam Xuyen district have also instructed people to take care of them, supplement vitamins and minerals in their diet; keep the barns dry and warm, regularly spray disinfectants; fully vaccinate the pigs; strictly isolate the farming area from the surrounding environment, and limit people from entering and leaving the barns.

Head of the Veterinary Department of Region III, Le Dinh Hue, proposed a number of solutions to control ASF in Cam Xuyen district.

During the inspection, representatives of the Veterinary Department of Region III and the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine recommended and warned about the risk of ASF outbreaks in the province and Cam Xuyen district. At the same time, they proposed a number of solutions for localities to control ASF such as: raising awareness and responsibility of each household, livestock facility, and person in the trade and slaughtering industry to proactively implement disease prevention and control solutions. At the same time, it is necessary to instruct livestock farmers to apply biosecurity measures, not to increase or restore herds when safety conditions have not been ensured; promptly report when pigs are found to be sick or dead for unknown reasons, and not to self-treat and sell sick pigs.

In addition, it is necessary to promptly provide medicine and disinfectant chemicals to farmers; assign specialized staff to closely follow the facilities to guide, direct, and closely monitor the livestock situation in the area; take samples for diagnosis, testing, and timely treatment of sick pigs according to regulations...

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Quang Tho spoke at the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Quang Tho emphasized that Cam Xuyen district needs to synchronously implement solutions according to the instructions of the Veterinary Department of Region III as well as the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. In particular, it is necessary to closely follow the direction in Official Dispatch No. 1097/CD-TTg dated November 16, 2023 of the Prime Minister on the drastic and synchronous implementation of solutions to prevent and control ASF, determined not to let the epidemic spread in the area, especially at the end of the year.
