Many farmers in Thai Nguyen are effectively applying the model of raising pigs with green tea powder to help pigs grow quickly, increase resistance and produce delicious meat quality. Thanks to that, pork sold on the market is favored and sought after by many customers.
Promoting the use of green tea in animal husbandry
In recent years, many households in Thai Nguyen province have boldly researched, tested and added starch from green tea leaves to their pigs' diets. This application has brought about remarkable results on many pig herds.
According to many published studies, green tea contains many nutrients including: Polyphenols, polysaccharides, saponins, vitamins and minerals. The effects of green tea on pig farming at different ratios will have different impacts on growth ability and meat quality.
In particular, Polyphenol in green tea can reduce total body fat (belly fat, back fat, visceral fat) and reduce the average thickness of back fat.
Polyphenols can reduce the accumulation of cholesterol in the body, because cholesterol affects the health of livestock and consumers. In addition, green tea leaf powder can improve the color of pork, one of the indicators of pork quality.
Adding green tea leaf powder to the diet of pigs can affect the proportion of essential amino acids in pig muscle, with good quality muscle this proportion can reach 40%.
The research topic "Raising pigs for meat with natural food supplemented with Thai Nguyen green tea leaf powder" is a scientific research topic of Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, implemented from December 2023 in some localities in the province.
To carry out the research topic, the research team from Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry deployed an experimental model on native black pigs at the household of Mr. Duong Van Hai and commercial foreign pigs at the household of Ms. Nguyen Thi Lieu (Duc Hoa hamlet, Thinh Duc commune, Thai Nguyen city) with a total of 72 pigs.

After 9 months of implementation, initial evaluation results showed that pigs raised on natural food supplemented with green tea ingredients helped increase immunity, reduce common diseases in the digestive tract, and increase the quality of pork.
From those results, recently, the People's Committee of Dai Tu district has coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology of Thai Nguyen, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry to organize training and technical guidance on testing the model of raising pigs for meat using natural food supplemented with Thai Nguyen green tea leaf powder at 2 families in Tan Linh commune. Those are the households of Mr. Tran Duc Minh (Hamlet 4, Tan Linh commune, Dai Tu district); Mr. Hua Van Manh (Hamlet 6, Tan Linh commune, Dai Tu district). Each household will test raise 50 pigs for meat for 6 months.
Families participating in the model experiment were instructed on techniques, how to mix and match natural foods, in which Thai Nguyen green tea leaf powder accounts for 3%, the rest is rice bran, corn bran, soybeans, minerals, multivitamins, other nutritional ingredients fermented with probiotics... Green tea powder is produced from dried tea leaves, then crushed, then added to the natural feed ingredients for raising pigs.
Building the green tea pork brand - a new specialty in Thai Nguyen
Mr. Dang Van Ngu's family - Director of Green Livestock Cooperative (Pha Residential Group, Luong Son Ward, Song Cong City, Thai Nguyen Province) is one of the large-scale pig farmers in Song Cong City. He shared that, stemming from the need to bring consumers clean, safe and quality products without using antibiotics, he had the idea of finding a way to reduce the antibiotic content in food when it is brought to the market.
For that reason, Mr. Ngu made a bold decision to not use antibiotics in livestock farming to increase the resistance of pigs. After 4 years, Mr. Ngu has succeeded with this innovative method.

Along with that, recently, the Economic Department of Song Cong City has coordinated with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry to organize the implementation of a pilot model of raising pigs for meat from natural food supplemented with Thai Nguyen green tea ingredients at Mr. Ngu's family farm. The experimental model was carried out on a herd of 29 pigs. The pigs' feed was all natural foods including rice bran, corn bran, soybeans, multivitamins... fermented with probiotics combined with green tea powder (3%).
According to Mr. Ngu, when the city implemented this model, his family strongly supported it. Although it has only been tested for nearly a month, he has seen some results, including healthier pigs and better digestive systems.
Not only that, using green tea powder as a supplement to pig feed also helps local people consume tea, because Song Cong is a place with available green tea raw materials.

Talking to PV Dan Viet , Mr. Ngo Quang Ba - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Song Cong City said: When being approached with the project of raising pigs with green tea powder of the Department of Science and Technology in conjunction with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, through the process of the family being trained and visiting the model directly, the Economic Department advised the city leaders to issue documents directing communes and wards to count households that are eligible to participate in this program.
Up to now, in Song Cong city, there are 12 households registered to participate in the model. However, through actual survey, only one household is eligible to participate in this model, which is Mr. Ngu's family.
"Regarding this content, we have invited Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry and professional staff from the Department of Science and Technology to provide direct training to households, so that farmers can grasp the process of mixing animal feed for the new experimental pig herd. According to initial assessments, the household head and the departments have actively cooperated. However, it is also necessary to have monitoring during a process to be able to assess the specific level of effectiveness, from which the model will be replicated in the city," Mr. Ba informed.
According to the Head of the Agriculture Department of Song Cong City, this model, if replicated, will be one of the premises to increase the value of pork, reduce the use of antibiotics in pig farming in particular and the livestock industry in general, and at the same time increase the value of tea trees, contributing to building the brand of green tea pork - a new specialty in Thai Nguyen.
