After the recent successful orange crop, people in Vu Quang district (Ha Tinh) took advantage of favorable weather to focus on fertilizing and nurturing trees for the new harvest season.
During the recent orange harvest season (from mid-November 2023 to early February 2024), Vu Quang residents harvested nearly 20,000 tons of fruit. With a good harvest and good prices, people immediately started taking care of and nurturing the trees.
Like many households in the area, at this time, Mr. Doan Manh Thuy's family in Hop Duc village (Huong Minh commune) is actively weeding, pruning branches and fertilizing more than 2 hectares of oranges of the family.

To ensure nutrition for the plants, Mr. Thuy's family used more than 2 tons of composted manure with biological products combined with Que Lam organic fertilizer to fertilize the oranges, in order to provide the best nutrients for the plants after harvest.
At this time, the orange trees are in the process of flowering and fruiting, so Mr. Thuy focuses on tree care.
Mr. Thuy said: “Caring for oranges after harvest is very important, it determines the yield and quality of the fruit in the next crop. Therefore, every year, around February, the family focuses on weeding, mounding, removing diseased orange trees and planting new trees to harvest in the following years.”
According to Mr. Thuy, last year's orange crop, thanks to ensuring planting techniques and careful care of each tree according to organic standards, the family's 2 hectares of oranges had high fruit yield, and at the end of the season, they sold more than 15 tons at an average price of 30,000 VND/kg. The orange crop was good and the price was good, so the family was very excited.
People discarded the remaining oranges.
Not only Mr. Thuy's family, at this time, people in Huong Minh commune are also focusing on taking care of nearly 200 hectares. Mr. Doan Ngoc Luong - Chairman of Huong Minh Commune People's Committee said: "Since the 5th day of Tet, people have been focusing on the hill gardens to fertilize the oranges. At this stage, the oranges are entering the flowering and fruiting period, if not monitored and cared for carefully, it will affect the yield at the end of the season. We are urging people to weed, fertilize the roots, supplement nutrients and prevent harmful pests such as: stem borers, yellow leaves, root rot, aphids...".
These days, orange growers in Duc Lien commune are actively taking care of their oranges in the hope of another successful crop. Quickly weeding nearly 3 hectares of oranges with more than 1,200 trees, Ms. Le Thi Hoan (Binh Quang village) excitedly said: “In the past two years, thanks to organic production, oranges have achieved high yields and sold at good prices. In particular, organic farming does not harm health, and the investment cost is not high, so the family is very confident in sticking with it. Since the 5th day of Tet, the family has started taking care of the oranges, weeding, cleaning the garden, and at the same time cultivating the soil and applying organic fertilizer to keep the orange trees healthy.”

According to Vu Quang orange growers, this year, the trees are blooming on time, with a high flower rate, so people are very excited. Households are actively working on the hills to soon complete the fertilization to "revive" the oranges after a long time of growing fruit.
In addition to weeding and fertilizing, Vu Quang residents have proactively upgraded their smart irrigation system to take care of their oranges.
Mr. Phan Xuan Nam - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vu Quang district said: "At this stage, orange growing areas are entering the flowering and fruiting period, so people need to pay close attention and visit their gardens regularly to promptly detect and prevent pests and diseases for their crops. Taking the initiative to take care of the trees at the right time and following technical procedures will help people have a bumper crop. To help people have more care techniques, the unit has assigned staff to go directly to localities to guide people on how to apply fertilizer, promptly detect pests and diseases and have effective prevention measures for nearly 2,300 hectares of oranges. When pests and diseases appear on the trees, it is necessary to spray specialized pesticides according to technical instructions to ensure the yield at the end of the season."
