Foggy weather in the early morning and high humidity have caused some spring rice areas in Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh) to be infected with rice blast disease, which is at risk of spreading.

On February 17, rice blast disease was detected at 2 locations in Phu Quy village, Xuan Hoi commune with an area of 2 sao of NX30 rice variety. This is one of the main rice varieties of the commune, accounting for about 40% of the area. Immediately after the detection, local authorities promptly instructed farmers to implement preventive measures such as: cutting and destroying the infected rice area; organizing spraying of pesticides according to instructions...
“The NX30 variety is susceptible to rice blast disease, and this production area is infected almost every year. In the conditions of drizzle, fog and high humidity, the risk of disease outbreaks and spread is very high. Currently, local authorities must be proactive, increase field inspections, and detect pests and diseases early. In addition to treating infected areas, we have directed farmers to spray Filia SE in neighboring areas on an area of 5 hectares, to contain and prevent disease outbreaks and spread widely,” said Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Hoi Commune.
People spray pesticides to prevent rice blast disease.
Just 2 days after the outbreak was detected in Xuan Hoi commune, in the fields of Kieu Thang Loi, Song Giang, Linh Thanh, Truong Thuy villages (Dan Truong commune), the rice blast disease officially "attacked", causing damage to an area of 1.6 hectares of rice with the infected varieties being XT28 and PM2. This is the locality with the largest rice blast infection in the district to date.
It is known that this area is cultivated in areas without proactive water sources, so from the beginning of the season, farmers have to sow before the province's crop schedule. At this time, the rice has tillered heavily, creating favorable conditions for the rice blast disease to develop and cause damage.
Ms. Le Thi Vui, Truong Thuy village said: "This spring crop, my family produced over 1 sao, using PM2 rice variety (not included in the seed structure) purchased through an acquaintance's recommendation. When I discovered 4 rice fields with "burned" leaves due to rice blast disease, I went to the field to cut them off and sprayed pesticides for the first time. Following the recommendations of the industry, I regularly go to the field to monitor the disease's progress, and at the same time prepare to spray pesticides for the second time when the weather is drier."
Farmers have cut down infected rice plants to prevent the disease from spreading widely.
Through inspection by the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock of Nghi Xuan district, up to now, the whole district has detected localized blast disease on early-planted rice with an area of nearly 2 hectares of spring rice, the average disease rate is 1 - 3%, in some places it is 5 - 7%, concentrated on Xi23, NX30 varieties, ... distributed in Xuan Hoi, Dan Truong, Xuan Lien. According to the assessment, the current level of damage caused by the disease is mild, but in humid weather conditions, the infected area is in the acute stage, the risk of outbreak is very high.
Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Crops and Livestock of Nghi Xuan district said: "Recently, due to the influence of cold air waves, the night and morning sky was cloudy, foggy, cold, little sunshine and high humidity in the air, which is the cause of the outbreak of rice blast disease. Currently, according to the forecast of the Ha Tinh Hydrometeorological Station, the weather in the coming days will continue to maintain little sunshine, high humidity, and an average temperature of 17 - 22 degrees Celsius, which is favorable for the spread, germination and invasion of rice blast fungus spores. At this time, nearly 320 hectares of spring rice in Nghi Xuan district are entering the tillering and intensive tillering period, causing the risk of the disease arising and causing widespread damage and rapid spread".
Nghi Xuan district's professional staff inspected the fields to detect early and promptly handle infected rice areas.
Nghi Xuan District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the District Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock assigned specialized staff to strengthen field inspections, grasp the development of harmful diseases to promptly detect areas affected by pests and diseases, especially rice blast disease.
In the immediate future, we direct localities to proactively monitor the weather, and when the weather is clear, focus on spraying preventive measures with special drugs such as: Beam 75WP, Kasoto 200SC, Angate 75WP, Flash 75WP, Kabim 30WP, Tricom 75WP... Focus on monitoring areas planted with susceptible varieties such as: NX30, ADI168, XT28, Xi23... in areas where the disease often occurs and causes damage in the communes of Dan Truong, Xuan Hoi, Xuan Pho, Xuan Giang...
