In fact, articles are removed because the authors have shortcomings and even mistakes in research, even violating scientific integrity. However, there is an opinion that "removing a scientific article is a small matter".
The author "regrets the carelessness"
Candidate Nguyen Thanh Tung - head of the key laboratory of Ho Chi Minh City National University, research on material structure, lecturer at the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - is a key member of the research team of Professor Phan Thanh Son Nam - who was accused of having many articles with fraudulent data and some of which were removed by international journals (as reported by Tuoi Tre).
According to the journal, the authors involved said they regretted the oversight and apologized for any inconvenience caused to readers.
"Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung is the corresponding author of the removed article, but his application for the title of associate professor in 2023 was still approved by the basic professor council (but was later eliminated by the State Professor Council).
Yet this year the faculty council continued to approve this candidate's profile," the lecturer reflected.
Another candidate, Ho Hoang Nhan - deputy dean, head of the department of pharmaceutical preparation - pharmaceutical industry - pharmaceutical chemistry, faculty of pharmacy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue University) - whose article published in the Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research in June 2023 was also removed.
The article was reported to be a duplicate of another article published earlier (in 2020) in Vietnamese, in which an image and some text in the article were repeated.
The editorial board investigated and discovered that the group of authors of the article (Ho Hoang Nhan, Nguyen Van Anh Tuan, Ho Nguyen Anh Thu, Le Thi Thanh Ngoc, Le Hoang Hao) violated scientific integrity, so the article was removed.
"In the application for recognition as an associate professor in 2024, Mr. Ho Hoang Nhan did not declare that the article was removed. It is clear that Mr. Nhan is dishonest. I really do not understand why the basic professor council still approved this candidate's application for violating integrity," a lecturer was upset.
What does the school say?
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thien Phuc - Vice Principal of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), at the 2024 faculty council, the school received information denouncing candidate Nguyen Thanh Tung, so it held the first meeting of the entire council. This meeting had the presence of observers from the State Council of Professors.
"After three reviews of the objections, the council reviewed candidate Nguyen Thanh Tung's application one more time. The removed article was withdrawn by the group of authors and the candidate did not include that article in the application.
Therefore, the council decided to let the candidate present an overview report to the council for evaluation.
This conclusion was also agreed upon by observers from the State Council of Professors. The satisfactory results and recommendations for consideration by higher councils are the general conclusion of the entire council," Mr. Phuc added.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Van Giang - Department of Science, Technology and International Relations (Hue University), the Hue University faculty council also received a complaint against candidate Ho Hoang Nhan. Mr. Nhan proactively worked with the council to explain the article being removed and admitted that this was a mistake due to "lack of experience".
"Mr. Ho Hoang Nhan used a photo and a paragraph that were published in an article published in 2020 to reuse in an article published in 2023 without citing specific sources, even though it was his own research.
Immediately after the article was removed, Mr. Nhan sent an email explaining so that the magazine's editorial board could better understand the behavior considered a violation of scientific integrity.
However, the magazine itself does not understand the Vietnamese meaning clearly, so it cannot determine the overlap rate of the two articles, so they decided to remove this article," said Mr. Giang.
"Just a minor violation"
According to Mr. Tran Van Giang, this incident happened in 2023 and at that time Mr. Ho Hoang Nhan was also applying for the associate professor position. But then Mr. Nhan requested to withdraw and was approved.
"Considering the case of Mr. Nhan's removed article with less than 25% duplication, Hue University believes that this is only a minor violation, not to the extent of disciplinary action, so only a warning is issued to gain experience. In 2024, the Hue University faculty council reviewed the profile of candidate Ho Hoang Nhan.
After checking, the council found that Mr. Nhan's profile met the requirements, so it was submitted to the State Council of Professors to carry out the next steps according to regulations," Mr. Giang added.
