Side effects of certain medications can cause hand tremors, especially when performing activities such as writing, holding a glass of water, or threading a needle.

"Tremors are common and generally benign. They are a type of movement disorder characterized by shaking. Other body parts such as the head or voice can also be affected," said Dr. Jason Singh at One Oak Medical Hospital (USA).

However, in some cases, people with hand tremors need to see a doctor as soon as possible. The first case to pay attention to is hand tremors but the cause is unknown. In that case, the patient should go for a check-up because this hand tremors can be a warning sign of a serious underlying disease.

Another example is hand tremors accompanied by muscle stiffness, slow movements, or problems with balance and coordination. These can be signs of thyroid disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, electrolyte imbalance, or even drinking too much alcohol.

In addition, patients should also see a doctor if the hand tremors become more severe or interfere with daily activities such as eating, writing, or typing. In these cases, a doctor should be seen as soon as possible.

Not all hand tremors are a sign of a serious health problem. Many causes of hand tremors are harmless. For example, stress and anxiety can also cause hand tremors. Some factors, such as side effects of medications and surgery, can cause tremors when performing activities such as writing, pouring water, or threading a needle.

Medications that can cause hand tremors as a side effect include antidepressants and antipsychotics. If you suspect that your hand tremors are a side effect of a medication, discuss this with your doctor to see if you need to change your medication.
