Streaming giant Netflix continues its success with K-drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines." According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea from March 18 to 20, "When Life Gives You Tangerines" has become the most favorite show among Koreans. The results were released on March 25 (local time) with 1,003 respondents aged 18 and older participating in the survey. "When Life Gives You Tangerines" won 6.9% of the votes, topping the poll.
This survey differs from others in that it goes beyond traditional ratings. It allows respondents to freely name their favorite shows regardless of time slot, platform, or channel. Starting in 2023, the survey will also include OTT content to reflect the growing influence of streaming.
“When Life Gives You Tangerines” has been releasing four episodes a week on Netflix since March 7, for a total of four weeks. Set in Jeju from the 1950s to the present, the drama follows the journey of literature-loving Oh Ae Soon (played by IU) and the steadfast Yang Gwan Sik (played by Park Bo Gum) as they grow together from childhood to adulthood and eventually become parents. Notably, IU and actress Moon So Ri play Ae Soon at different stages of her life, while Park Bo Gum and actor Park Hae Joon both play Gwan Sik.

The drama has garnered significant attention for its collaboration between screenwriter Im Sang Choon and director Kim Won Seok. Im Sang Choon is known for his dramas “Fight for My Way” and “When Comellia Blooms,” and has been praised for capturing sentiment and emotional depth while portraying realistic romance. Meanwhile, Kim Won Seok is known for directing popular dramas such as “Misaeng,” “Signal,” and “My Mister.” In each of these dramas, director Kim has been praised for his portrayal of complex and dynamic human relationships.
This marks the fifth time a Netflix original has been ranked No. 1 in the Gallup poll, with "The Glory" (March 2023), "Culinary Class War" (October 2024), "Squid Game Season 2" (January 2025), and "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" (February 2025) previously taking the top spot. Notably, this is the first time a single streaming platform has topped the chart for three consecutive months, further cementing Netflix's influence.
In this poll, TV Chosun's trot audition program "Mr. Trot 3" ranked second after "When Life Gives You a Tangerine" with a 4.7% popularity rating. The program ended its season on March 13 with Kim Yong Bin being crowned the final winner, gaining widespread attention. It is the only traditional television program to challenge Netflix's dominance in Korea, proving the continued popularity of the trot genre.
KBS2's weekend drama "For Eagle Brothers," which recently surpassed 20 percent in viewership, ranked third with 3.5 percent. KBS1's daily drama "My Merry Marriage" (3.2 percent) followed in fourth place. SBS's Friday-Saturday drama "Buried Hearts" took fifth place with 2.8 percent. Other shows in the top 10 included "Running Man," "2 Days & 1 Night Season 4," "I Am a Natural Person," and "Cinderella Game."
