Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the IDF carried out airstrikes against chemical weapons storage sites and long-range missile facilities in Syria, saying the move was necessary to prevent dangerous weapons from falling into the hands of terrorist and Islamist groups.

“Our only concern is the safety of Israel and its people,” Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said.

However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry did not specify the time and duration of the attacks.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the destruction of Syria's arsenals was necessary after the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime to prevent chemical weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists. (Photo: Getty)

According to the AP news agency, Israel attacked the Mezzeh military airport, located southwest of Damascus, on December 8. This facility is often the target of Israeli air operations.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria in recent years, targeting what it says are military sites linked to the militant group Hezbollah. Defense Minister Israel Katz said on December 9 that the military had been ordered to establish full control of a buffer zone along the Syrian border in the Golan Heights.

Mr. Katz stressed that military action along the Syrian border would block arms smuggling routes from Iran into Lebanon as well as the movement of weapons across the border by paramilitary groups.

On December 8, Syrian opposition forces quickly took control of Damascus over the weekend after just over 10 days of uprising. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that after negotiations with the opposition, former President Bashar al-Assad agreed to step down and live as a political refugee in Moscow.

Since the Syrian conflict broke out in 2011, the United States, Britain and other Western powers have accused the government of former President Bashar al-Assad of using chemical weapons against civilians and opposition forces, and used these accusations as a justification for the US military's occupation of oil-rich areas in northeastern Syria since 2014.
