(CLO) On February 6, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to prepare a plan to allow people to "voluntarily leave" the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media reports.
The directive comes after US President Donald Trump's shock announcement that the US plans to take over Gaza, resettle Palestinians living there and turn the area into the "Riviera of the Middle East".
"I welcome President Trump's bold plan, the people of Gaza should be allowed to leave and emigrate freely, as is the practice all over the world," Israel's Channel 12 quoted Minister Katz as saying.

Asked who would take in the Palestinians, Mr. Katz said the responsibility lay with the countries that have criticized Israel's military campaign in Gaza.
"Countries such as Spain, Ireland, Norway and others that have made false accusations and claims against Israel regarding its actions in Gaza are legally obliged to allow any Gaza residents to enter their territory," he said.
According to Channel 12, Mr. Katz's plan will include options for land evacuation, as well as special arrangements for evacuation by sea and air.
Mr Trump's proposal was quickly met with criticism from world powers. Russia, China and Germany condemned the plan on February 5, saying it would cause "new suffering and hatred".
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has rejected the proposal outright, while Jordan's King Abdullah, who is scheduled to meet Mr Trump at the White House next week, has said he opposes any attempt to annex land and displace Palestinians.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a different view. On February 5, he called Mr. Trump's proposal "remarkable" and called for serious consideration.
