The Executive Committee of the International Police Organization (Interpol) has just elected Mr. Valdecy Urquiza - head of the international cooperation department of the Brazilian Federal Police - as Secretary General for a new term.
According to Reuters, this is the first time a police official from a developing country has been elected to this position. Mr. Valdecy Urquiza, 43 years old, graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, will succeed Mr. Juergen Stock of Germany as head of Interpol for the 2025-2030 term.
In the vote held at Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France, Mr. Valdecy Urquiza received 8 votes, while British candidate Stephen Kavanagh received 2 votes and Zambian candidate Mubita Nawa received 1 vote. According to the rules, the election results must be ratified by the Interpol General Assembly, scheduled for November in Glasgow, England.
Interpol is the world's largest police organization with 196 member countries. In its 100 years of operation, the organization has been run by officials from five Western countries, including the United States, and four European countries.
