Thai Hoa Palace - an iconic architectural work of the Nguyen Dynasty, has officially received the LOTUS green building certification from the Vietnam Green Building Council. This is the first time a cultural relic belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Vietnam has achieved green building standards.

Thai Hoa Palace is the most important structure in the Hue Imperial Palace area - where the Nguyen Dynasty kings ruled the country for 143 years. The palace began construction on January 22, the 4th year of Gia Long (February 1805) and was completed in October of the same year. However, in 1833, when King Minh Mang re-planned the structures in the Hue Imperial City, Thai Hoa Palace was moved from its old location to its current location.

After more than 200 years of existence, under the impact of time and harsh climate, despite many restorations and renovations, Thai Hoa Palace has now seriously degraded. On November 23, 2021, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center organized the groundbreaking ceremony for the project to preserve and restore the entire Thai Hoa Palace relic with a budget of more than 128 billion VND.

Within 3 years, from November 2021 to November 2024, the Thai Hoa Palace restoration process will be strictly implemented with the use of traditional materials, combined with modern conservation techniques, optimizing energy efficiency and limiting emissions, to restore the building while ensuring original elements and meeting sustainable criteria.
“We appreciate Hue’s commitment to bringing green thinking to heritage conservation,” said Douglas Lee Snyders, Executive Director of VGBC. “LOTUS is not just a certification, but an affirmation that heritage is not just the past, but also the future, if properly protected.”
