Built in the 8th century under the Syailendra dynasty, Borobudur Temple is considered one of the most spiritual places for Buddhists in Indonesia. The government now has a policy to turn the largest Buddhist temple in the region from a cultural heritage to a world religious tourist destination.
The Borobudur complex is undergoing a complete renovation of its landscape, facilities such as convention halls, restaurants, hotels, transportation, and redesigning of full-service spiritual tours to serve not only Buddhists but also general tourists. Notably, the government is also planning to open direct flights from various Buddhist centers in the region to Yogyakarta such as Bangkok - Yogyakarta and Kuala Lumpur - Yogyakarta. The projects will be implemented from now until the end of the year.
