Mr. Lee Won-jae ended his contract with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) after the AFF Cup 2024. The two sides did not sign an extension. The Korean goalkeeper coach said goodbye to the Vietnamese team and returned to work in his home country.
Lee Won-jae is a legendary goalkeeper of Korean football, contributing greatly to the journey of the Korean team to the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup. In addition, he played in the 1994, 2006 and 2010 World Cups. Coach Lee Won-jae signed a 2-month contract with VFF before the 2024 AFF Cup.

Coach Lee Won-jae directly worked with 3 goalkeepers of the Vietnamese team at the AFF Cup 2024, namely Nguyen Dinh Trieu, Nguyen Filip, and Tran Trung Kien. The former Korean player born in 1986 was the one who gave decisive assessments and suggestions for coach Kim Sang-sik to choose goalkeepers for the Vietnamese team in the matches.
The most controversial decision of the duo Kim Sang-sik and Lee Won-jae regarding this position was to put Nguyen Filip on the bench for Dinh Trieu. Filip still played in 2 matches for the Vietnamese team - against Indonesia and the Philippines in the group stage. However, Dinh Trieu was the preferred choice thanks to his ability to communicate better with his teammates in defense.
The Vietnamese team won the AFF Cup 2024 with a record of conceding only 6 goals after 8 matches. Dinh Trieu received the title of best goalkeeper of the tournament.
