The highlight of the final day of the second qualifying round of the Ho Chi Minh City Billiards World Cup is the round of 16 matches in the afternoon. These are the matches that will decide the 8 names that will win the last 8 spots to represent Vietnam in the tournament next May.
The tournament is hosted by the Ho Chi Minh City Billiards and Snooker Federation (HBSF).
In Group B, young player Nguyen Hoai Phong caused a surprise when he defeated veteran player Vo Hao Tri. In the first set, Hoai Phong led 15-10. In the second set, Hao Tri made good use of each of his cues to lead 25-21. However, at the end of the match, Hoai Phong unleashed his strength with precise cues to win the match with a final score of 30-26.
Nguyen Hoai Phong was born in 2003 in An Giang and currently lives in Ho Chi Minh City. This player has been playing 3-cushion carom for about 7 years.
Previously, Hoai Phong won the runner-up position at the Ho Chi Minh City Open 3-Cushion Billiards Youth Tournament in 2022 and represented Vietnam at the 2022 World Youth 3-Cushion Billiards Championship in the Netherlands.
In Group F, the "super classic" match between Nguyen Tran Thanh Tao and Dinh The Vinh took place excitingly. Against the reigning runner-up of HBSF Tour 1 2025, The Vinh showed his mettle by continuously scoring points to lead 15-8 in the first half.
The climax of the match came when Thanh Tao equalized the score 24-24. At this moment, The Vinh launched a series of 5 points to take the lead 29-24 before winning 30-28 after 21 innings.
Another dramatic match was in Group H when Dinh Quang Hai won 30-26 against veteran player Nguyen Van Tai after 22 rounds. Nguyen Nhu Le (Group G) defeated Binh Dinh's elite representative Huynh Xuan Chau with a difference of 30-20 after 19 rounds.
Other notable results include Nguyen Hoan Tat beating Le Van Huong. Nguyen Ngoc Son beating Trinh Quang Huy. Truong Quang Hao beating Chuong Thanh Nhan and Nguyen Thanh Liem beating Nguyen Anh Duy.
Thus, after 5 days of intense competition, the last 8 slots to attend the Ho Chi Minh City Billiards World Cup for Vietnamese players have been determined. These players will be fully sponsored by HBSF for their participation fee (100 euros). Previously, the first selection round held in early March determined the first 8 names to attend the World Cup.
