On March 9, the admissions and career counseling program was organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper in coordination with the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), the General Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs), the Department of Education and Training of Hai Duong, and the Hai Duong Provincial Youth Union.

From early morning, over 6,000 Hai Duong students were present at the program to participate in the consultation session and find information at over 70 separate consultation booths of training institutions.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the program, Mr. Luong Van Viet - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Hai Duong - said that in recent years, many high school seniors tend to choose their majors based on the crowd and trends, and only find out when they enroll that the major is not suitable for their interests and abilities.

Many young people who graduate from university put their degrees in a drawer to look for another career. This is a problem for education leaders.

The admissions and career counseling program in Hai Duong is truly a valuable opportunity to support industry leaders in addressing the lack of career information for students.

Foreign language certificates are still an advantage in admissions

Responding to concerns of many candidates, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - affirmed that the Ministry of Education and Training still allows candidates to use valid foreign language certificates to register for exemption from foreign language exams for graduation consideration. In case of exemption from exams, the foreign language score will be confirmed as 10.

"However, the use of foreign language certificates to calculate university admission scores will be determined by training institutions. Candidates need to find out the admission information of the schools for guidance," Mr. Hung reminded candidates.

Sharing in general about the issue of university admissions in 2024, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung said that in 2024, university admissions regulations will remain stable but there are some notes for candidates. The Ministry of Education and Training only issues framework regulations, while detailed regulations are determined by universities. Therefore, candidates need to carefully study the admission information of the schools they want to apply to.

Early admission or same-round admission methods are all included in the general admission system. The Ministry of Education and Training does not control the number of candidates' wishes but will only confirm that candidates are admitted to 1 wish with the highest priority. Therefore, after registering for admission according to the schools' own regulations, candidates need to update their wishes on the system, the wish they want more will be ranked higher.

Candidates also need to pay attention to the secondary criteria in the school's admission plan to ensure the necessary conditions. If they ignore the secondary criteria, they may fall into a situation where they have enough points to be considered for admission to the school but still not be confirmed as admitted.

Woman asks about "semiconductor chips", artificial intelligence and military schools

An interesting thing about the admissions consulting program in Hai Duong is that the first hands raised to ask directly were all from female students asking about majors that were thought to be only suitable for men.

A female student from Chi Linh High School (Hai Duong) asked about the "semiconductor chip" industry. She said she had researched the semiconductor chip manufacturing industry and learned that this is an industry that is receiving attention.

Sharing with me, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duy Hai, Head of Admissions and Career Guidance at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, also affirmed that semiconductor chips are a "hot" field from this year to the next few years. The university is preparing programs, equipment, and laboratories for training human resources in this field for microchip design or materials engineering related to this field.

Some other students, mostly female, are interested in military and artificial intelligence fields.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh - Vice Principal of Phenikaa University - also said that students interested in AI should know that not only information technology is trained, but there are many more specific majors, closer to current job needs, being opened by schools. For example, in the health sciences sector, there is a major in diagnostic imaging that also requires AI.

Following Mr. Khanh, Ms. Pham Thanh Ha - Deputy Head of Training Management Department, Foreign Trade University - also said that not only engineering and technology sectors but also the economic sector needs to apply information technology.

Ms. Ha said that this year, Foreign Trade University will have a new major, computer science. However, this major of the school will aim to provide tools to detect and handle economic problems in the current context.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Thien - in charge of enrollment at Army Officer School 1 (Ministry of National Defense) - gave some female students good news that many military training facilities are still recruiting women this year.

"10% of the total quota is for women to enroll in military schools," said Mr. Thien.

However, Mr. Thien also reminded candidates to carefully study the conditions of the training majors for women. They must meet the preliminary requirements before registering for admission. This year, the military sector will have additional admission methods. In addition to the admission methods prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training (direct admission, priority admission), admission based on high school graduation exam results, military schools have methods of considering high school transcripts and considering based on the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Hanoi National University.

Go get advice for your child

The 2024 admissions and career counseling program in Hai Duong not only attracted a large number of candidates, but many parents also lined up in front of separate counseling booths to wait for troubleshooting.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc (Hai Duong) said that because her child had to take an exam today and could not come to the consultation, she went instead. Because her child was interested in economics and engineering schools, she went directly to the teachers for advice.

Currently, Ms. Ngoc is wondering about the admission conditions and the chance of being admitted to the early admission method of the schools, especially the condition of achieving a minimum score of 24 points for a combination when considering the transcript to enter the Foreign Trade University.

"My child is a student majoring in Russian at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, and has an IELTS score of 7.5. However, I am still very worried that when my child plans to apply for admission to Foreign Trade University through his/her transcript, what are the admission requirements? Is the admission combination required to achieve a minimum score of 24 points?"

At the consultation booth, the teacher said that her child got 7.5 IELTS, equivalent to 10 points, in addition, she will take 2 subjects of literature and math, the total of 2 subjects must be at least 14 points to meet the admission requirements. Regarding the condition of having a combination of 24 points, there is no need to duplicate the admission combination.

"After listening to the advice, I feel secure. I will continue to go to technical schools to learn about mechanical engineering," said Ms. Nga.

Similarly, Ms. Hoang Thi Huong (Hai Duong) said that her child is in grade 12 so she is very interested in university admission information, wondering how to choose a school for her child that is suitable for the tuition fee, and which major has many job opportunities in the future that is suitable for her child.

Ms. Huong went through the booths of economic schools such as National Economics University, Foreign Trade University... to consult about the majors.

"My child has not yet chosen a specific major, he only intends to study economics. Today I will have to go to many consulting rooms to learn carefully. Especially, he has an IELTS certificate of 7.5 and is preparing for the competency assessment test. With these certificates, which admission method will be the most suitable?"

At the separate consulting booths, many questions related to new major enrollment information, job opportunities; early admission methods, admission conditions, etc. were answered by students and parents.
