(HNMO) - Hanoi will implement a vitamin A supplementation campaign at 1,715 drinking points on June 1 and 2; and a comprehensive drinking campaign on June 3 and 4. The total number of children aged 6 to 35 months receiving vitamin A during this time is 392,131.

On the afternoon of May 29, the Hanoi Department of Health held a conference to deploy the vitamin A supplementation campaign and Micronutrient Day activities in 2023.

Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health Vu Cao Cuong spoke at the conference.

According to the Hanoi Department of Health, the vitamin A supplementation campaign will take place at 1,715 drinking points for 2 days (June 1 and 2) and the whole drinking will be on June 3 and 4. The subjects receiving vitamin A supplementation are children from 6 to 35 months old who are present in the locality, including transient children and children being treated at medical facilities.

In addition, from June 1 to 7, Hanoi also launched a campaign to weigh and measure all children under 5 years old living in the area.

According to an investigation report by the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), a total of 392,131 children aged 6 to 35 months received vitamin A during this occasion.

Vitamin A is received from the National Institute of Nutrition and distributed to drinking points before the campaign based on the list, number of drinking subjects, number of drinking points and vitamin A reserves of medical centers in districts, towns. The expected time for distributing vitamin A is on May 29 and 30.

The campaign aims to have over 99.8% of children aged 6 to 35 months receive high-dose vitamin A in two phases (phase 1 in June and phase 2 scheduled for December 2023). In addition, over 95% of children under 5 years old will be weighed and measured for height to assess the rate of malnutrition (underweight, stunting, wasting) and the rate of overweight and obesity.

In order for the campaign to achieve high results, Deputy Director of the Department of Health Vu Cao Cuong requested that drinking points and weighing points must be organized according to a one-way process, clean and airy. On the other hand, there must be enough waiting chairs in a covered area to avoid the sun and heat for children. In particular, the number of children must be allocated reasonably, and children must be invited to drink by the hour to avoid overcrowding, causing congestion and overload.

Give children vitamin A supplements at Viet Hung Ward Health Station, Long Bien District.

In addition, Mr. Vu Cao Cuong also requested that medical staff directly giving children vitamin A must be screened before giving it to children. Children with signs of contraindications must be temporarily stopped and given a replacement dose at an appropriate time after these signs of contraindications have disappeared. In addition, medical staff giving children vitamin A must ensure the correct technique, correct subjects, and sufficient dosage as prescribed by age.

The city will establish inspection teams to prepare and implement the vitamin A supplementation campaign and Micronutrient Day activities in Hanoi.

Micronutrient Day (June 1 and 2) in 2023 has the theme "Micronutrients are essential for growth, physical development, stature and intelligence, improving health and resistance of the body". To prevent and combat micronutrient deficiency, everyone and every family should:

1. Daily meals need to be varied and combine many types of food; choose and use foods fortified with micronutrients.

2. Breastfeed your baby within the first hour after birth. Breastfeed your baby exclusively for the first 6 months; continue breastfeeding until 24 months of age or beyond.

3. Use locally available micronutrient-rich foods for your child's daily supplementary meals; add fat or cooking oil to enhance vitamin A and vitamin D absorption.

4. Give children of appropriate age a high dose of vitamin A according to the micronutrient supplementation campaign twice a year.

5. Children from 24 to 60 months old take deworming medicine twice a year. Practice good food hygiene, personal hygiene, and environmental hygiene to prevent worm infection.

6. Women of childbearing age and pregnant women should take iron/folic acid tablets or multivitamin tablets as directed.
