Michelin Guide, the world's prestigious culinary guide, will for the first time award stars to Vietnamese restaurants in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, announced the Michelin-starred restaurants this evening.
This is the first time that restaurants in Vietnam have been awarded Michelin stars or featured in the guide. From December 1, 2022, the judges came to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to find the best restaurants. They are experienced people in the fields of cuisine, restaurant services, hotels, and highly skilled chefs, coming from 15 countries.

In addition to Michelin-starred restaurants, Poullennec also publishes the list of Michelin Selected restaurants; Michelin Guide Special Awards winners and Bid Gourmand restaurants.
The restaurants selected by Michelin are expected to be a new landmark for Vietnam's tourism industry. Tourists will have more suggestions for high-end stops when coming to Vietnam, first in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
"The moment when Michelin Guide first announced the list of restaurants in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City receiving stars was also a historic moment for Vietnamese cuisine," said Sun Hospitality Group General Director Nguyen Vu Quynh Anh. Ms. Quynh Anh believes that Michelin's recognition will help Vietnam effectively position its cuisine on the world map, contributing to enhancing the position of the country's tourism industry.
The Michelin Guide is currently considered the world's most prestigious culinary guide, ranking restaurants through a "star" system. One star is for a restaurant that "has delicious food, worth stopping to enjoy". Two stars is for "a restaurant with excellent food, worth returning to". Three stars (the highest) is for "a place with excellent food, worth planning to visit in person to enjoy".
Restaurants are independently evaluated by anonymous judges, according to global standards, based on five criteria: food quality, culinary talent, flavor harmony, the chef's personality expressed through the dishes, and the consistency of the dishes over time and across the entire menu.
The Michelin Guide currently lists restaurants in more than 40 countries and territories. It was first published by the Michelin Tire Company in France in 1900. Today, the Michelin Guide remains committed to its original promise: to provide international visitors and local diners with the world's best restaurants, to honor cuisine, and to promote tourism.
