A 16-year-old male student died when a homemade firecracker exploded. Initial investigations determined that the victim secretly bought chemicals from his parents to make the firecracker, leading to the accident.
On the afternoon of January 20, Mr. Tra Thanh Danh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai City, said that a student died when homemade firecrackers exploded in his home.
Accordingly, the incident occurred at around 2:00 p.m. the same day in My Lai village, Tinh Khe commune, Quang Ngai city.
At that time, D.MA (16 years old) was making fireworks in a separate room from the main house when the fireworks exploded.
Local people heard a loud explosion and ran to the scene to see the male student lying motionless on the ground.
Immediately afterwards, people helped take A. to Quang Ngai General Hospital for emergency treatment, but he did not survive.
A witness at the scene said the homemade firecracker exploded, destroying the metal roof and leaving a lot of materials used to make the firecrackers scattered everywhere. A. suffered severe burns and injuries all over her body.
"I was in the field a few hundred meters away and still heard a very loud explosion. I didn't know what was going on, I heard people walking and shouting that firecrackers had killed someone. I ran into Mr. Duong's house (where the incident happened) and saw A. lying motionless," said the witness.
Mr. Tra Thanh Danh said: "According to the initial report, D.MA is in 11th grade, bought chemicals to make fireworks at home and the fireworks exploded, leading to the accident. Currently, Quang Ngai City Police are coordinating with the Provincial Police to examine the scene and investigate to clarify the matter."
Sources at Quang Ngai General Hospital said this was not the first case of hospitalization due to homemade firecrackers exploding. In recent days, the hospital has admitted a number of teenagers with crushed hands, multiple injuries, burns, etc. and their families confirmed that their children were victims of making and exploding firecrackers.
In recent times, Quang Ngai Provincial Police have repeatedly warned of the dangers caused by homemade fireworks, and have seized many chemicals used to make fireworks. There have been cases where parents have reported to the police after discovering their children making fireworks, handing over all the chemicals and fuses.
Despite repeated warnings, accidents due to homemade fireworks still occur. Through this incident, authorities continue to warn parents to monitor their children, especially when they go online to buy chemicals, supplies, and learn how to make homemade fireworks.
Coordinate promptly with authorities and schools to prevent unfortunate incidents from happening.
