THUA THIEN - HUE - More than 400 ancient apricot trees worth hundreds of millions of dong are on display at the Hue apricot exhibition in Thuong Bac park along the Huong River.

Within the framework of the Hue Royal Apricot - Spring Masterpiece 2024 contest, artisans displayed hundreds of ancient apricot trees for people and tourists to admire.

Growing and playing with yellow apricot flowers has been an elegant hobby of Hue people from the past to the present. The contest aims to restore and spread the tradition of growing apricot flowers and playing with ornamental apricot flowers associated with the movements of yellow apricot flowers in front of the alley and Hue - City of four seasons of flowers launched by Thua Thien Hue province.

Unlike the red-leaf apricot in the South, the yellow apricot in Hue usually has 5 petals, a light, very unique fragrance. The yellow apricot is also called lap mai. Lap is beeswax, compared to the bright yellow color of the apricot blossom. In other words, lap nguyet is December, lap mai is the apricot flower that only blooms once a year at the end of December (the 12th lunar month). The yellow apricot is grown a lot by Hue people in their family temples and family yards.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Lam, 61 years old, in Thuy Phuong ward, Huong Thuy town, said that during Tet, his family often displays a yellow apricot tree. To make the apricot blossom in time for Tet, growers often pluck the leaves a few weeks before depending on the growth of each tree.

Many apricot trees over 100 years old, worth hundreds of millions of VND, are brought by artisans to display and sell on the spot. Compared to other local apricot species, Hue's royal apricot trees are often more expensive. In the photo is an apricot tree valued at 300 million VND by its owner.

The over 100-year-old apricot tree is among the group of 100 ancient apricot trees proposed for recognition as a Guinness Vietnam record.

Artisan Le Quang Thu brought to the competition a 150-year-old yellow apricot root, 3.5 m high, 3 m wide, among 100 ancient yellow apricot trees in Hue that had their QR codes scanned, proposed for recognition as a Guinness Vietnam record.
The tree is valued at 250 million VND, but Mr. Thu has no intention of selling it, he wants to preserve it.

The 1.5 m tall, 1.6 m wide yellow apricot tree of artisan Tran Ngoc Son won the gold prize of the competition. The artisans evaluated the apricot tree as having even branches from the base to the top, with round branches. Players valued the tree at about 200 million VND.

Thua Thien Hue is building the project Hue - the land of yellow apricot , implementing many solutions to preserve and develop the yellow apricot variety.
