Books are the priceless “treasure of knowledge” of mankind. Reading books not only enriches knowledge about science as well as life but also helps students entertain after stressful study hours. Therefore, training students in reading habits and developing a reading culture in schools are always valued by schools in the province and considered as one of the important factors contributing to improving the quality of education.

Forming reading habits for students Students of Tay Do Secondary School (Vinh Loc) read books at the school library.

Identifying that forming a reading habit is a solution to help students have better life experiences as well as proactively enrich their knowledge, in recent years, Tay Do Secondary School (Vinh Loc) has always paid attention to forming a reading habit for students and developing a reading culture in schools. To do that, the school has maximized the role of the school library, creating an open, friendly space for students to read after each regular class. Teacher Trinh Trung Chau, Principal of Tay Do Secondary School shared: “In order to spread the love of books and encourage the development of a reading culture, the school has mobilized resources to build a spacious library according to the criteria of a national standard school with more than 5,600 books and newspapers of all kinds. The school library is open continuously every day of the week so that students and teachers can come to read books and find materials after each regular class. The school's goal is to build a truly open library, where books are not only for display and decoration, but to serve the reading, learning and research needs of both teachers and students. And more importantly, through the activities of the library as well as the nurturing of teachers, students will love reading and form a reading habit."

At Hau Loc Town Secondary School (Hau Loc), in addition to investing in and maintaining the school library for students and teachers to read, research teaching materials and borrow books to take home, the school also built a mobile library in each class for students to read during recess, before or after each class. In particular, in recent times, the school has created many spaces for students to access books such as organizing the contest "We tell stories from books"; "Book reading festival", thereby contributing to fostering the love of books for students.

Not stopping at libraries and bookcases in the classroom, from the idea of creating a highlight in the pedagogical landscape, helping students have a useful playground after stressful school hours, while developing a reading culture in schools, the green library model has been formed in many schools in the province such as Xuan Lai Primary School, Xuan Lap Primary School (Tho Xuan); Quang Hai Primary School (Quang Xuong)... Teacher Pham Van Tuan, Principal of Xuan Lai Primary School (Tho Xuan) said: The green library model was built by the school in 2021 with an area of 110m2. To create interest in reading for students, the library is arranged harmoniously, aesthetically, close and friendly to nature. Inside the library is simply designed with cabinets, shelves of books and newspapers neatly arranged in easily recognizable positions, convenient for students to read. Currently, the school's green library has nearly 5,000 books, with many different genres such as reference books on learning knowledge, children's comics, jokes, fairy tales...

Reality has proven that developing a reading culture is extremely important for students, helping them form a healthy lifestyle, limit the use of electronic devices that are harmful to health and uncontrolled social networks, affecting the psychological development of students. Nguyen Minh Duc, a student at Dong Bac Ga Primary, Secondary and High School (Thanh Hoa City) shared: “Before, after school hours, I often watched TV and used my phone. But since the school launched and encouraged students to go to the library, I started reading books. Reading books regularly not only helps me practice reading skills, but also adds more knowledge about history, society and life skills.”

It can be seen that reading spaces in schools have been creating a healthy environment to help students practice the habit of daily contact with new knowledge through the pages of books, thereby contributing to nurturing the soul and forming good personalities for students. Therefore, in addition to investing in building standard libraries with useful books suitable for each age group, many schools also build a series of experiential activities to spread the reading culture to each staff, teacher and student. Some schools have even chosen books as highlights, as gifts for students at the end of each school year. However, many managers and teachers believe that in order to develop and form reading habits for students and further enhance the reading culture in schools, in addition to the investment of schools, it is necessary to have the cooperation and support of parents and the community. Parents must realize that reading is the shortest way to accumulate knowledge from basic to advanced in all fields. From there, pay attention to investing, motivating and encouraging your children to read books anytime, anywhere if possible.
